May 27, 2005 - Playa del Carmen

We have been back on the coast now for a couple of days. Inland Mexico was interesting, but hot, and at least now we can go for a swim to cool off. We took a 9:30 bus from Valladolid on Wednesday morning and got into Playa del Carmen shortly after lunch. My mother had come across a hostal with lots of good reviews on the internet, so we decided to check it out, and what a find! It's just three blocks from the beach, and, as far as hostals go, it's awesome. It's not really high on character, but it's brand new and spotless, with very...

May 22, 2005 - Playa del Carmen

A welcome relief from Cancun, Playa is more Byron than Gold Coast. Great beach, shops, restaurants and bars but no buildings over three stories. We basically bummed about for a few days working on the tan and reading wth regular beer breaks. The photos speak for themselves - we felt like we were on holiday from travelling.

Mar 27, 2005 - Playa Del Carmen

Well after a nightmare in San Christobal I decided to head off Straight to Palya Del Carmen for some well earned RnR. The beaches here are really clear and strikingly blue. We stayed at the usual place on the beach although the prices have risen since I was last here so no beach front room this time. Since doing my PADI Advanced Diving in Krabi I have been dying to get back in the water, especially as Playa is just off Cozumel Island where Jacque Cousteau made a lot of documentries in the 70s. I decided on a two tank drift dive off of a...

Mar 9, 2005 - Playa Del Carmen

We left Isla Mujeres and caught the afternoon ferry back to cancun, and then jumped on a bus down to Playa del Carmen. PDC is much like the Noosa scene of back home - beautiful beached, a really nice pedestrian mall with lots of cafes, beautiful shops and some really cool bars and restaurants - cept it was Noosa with heaps of loud americans. Tash was in love with it.. She finally had a chance to have a look at some clothes shops since San Fran and just really liked the place. We had a few more days of beach time, just swimming and...

Mar 3, 2005 - Playa Del Carmen - Part I

Wednesday, 16th of February; Arrived at 7am to miami airport where I caught an airport shuttle to Hollywood airport in Ft. Lauderdale. Had to wait for my connecting flight departing at 12,00. Landed in Cancun at 14,00 where I took the bus to Playa del Carmen and checked into the first hotel I found by the bus station and seemed ok. That afternoon I went to the Abyss dive shop to say HI to Diego, Oscar, Mike and was so much fun seeing them again after one year. Had a bite to eat in Dr.Tacos then passed by the Beer Bucket and La Rana Cansada...

Feb 10, 2005 - Playa Del Carmen - Mexican Yucatan

For our February vacation this year Zig and I and our friend Carlie from my workplace, went to Playa Del Carmen in the Mexican Yucatan about 60 KM South of Cancun. On Feb 10 we got up at 3:30 AM and prepared to get our trip started. We had a 7:30 to 8:00 AM departure on Continental and arrived in Cancun about 4:30PM. After we cleared customs we took a 1 hour bus ride to Playa Del Carmen. This bus ride was worlds away from our last experience in Puerto Villarta. We couldn't see the ground through the floor! This was a luxurious bus with...

Dec 9, 2004 - Mexico

Becky and I decided we needed a change of scenery. We had heard that Playa del Carmen was more touristy, but it is also a bigger city than Tulum, so I figured more tourists/more space it all evens out to be just a bigger Tulum.... WRONG! Becky and I took a first class bus up to PDC and slept the whole way. We found our way to a hotel that is nice, secure, quiet and had air-conditioning. After checking in we decided to walk around and explore this new town. No sooner had we set foot on the main drag, were we being pulled in every direction...

Sep 5, 2004 - Akumal Mexico, Caribbean Retreat-1999

Akumal, Mexico: A Caribbean Retreat (Yucatan Peninsula map) Click, whirrrrr. The camera shutter closes on yet another brilliant moment. To the west, the setting moon dangles on a deep blue background while eastward the rising sun guilds the facades of the scattered buildings below, highlighting the edges of palm fronds. Magenta, bronze and azure streak the sky overhead. Caribbean colors. Maya colors. The colors of our dreams. It's our first morning on the playa (beach) in Akumal, Mexico. From our balcony, we enjoy the breathtaking view of...

May 20, 2004 - Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Zoe and I spent almost a week in Playa del Carmen which is about an hours drive from Cancun. We stayed in a cabana again, this time very close to the clear Caribbean, and we got into a bit of a routine again - sleeping in, going out for breakfast, lazing on the beach all day, having a siesta in the afternoon, swimming in the hotel pool, then showering and going out for dinner and a dance. We were shown around by some waiters we'd met at 'Carlos 'n' Charlie's' (a popular restaurant/bar). We visited bars like 'The Blue Parrot', 'El Pirate'...
