Feb 26, 2009 - Longest Drive

We are finally off the coast of the Caribbean Sea, and headed back to the west. After what seems like weeks, the landscape is changing from hot, dry and flat to hot, humid and mountainous. We leave Chetumal with no hesitation, although the day promises to be long and tiring. The route is mostly due west, and after some very good road, turns difficult. The majority of the day we alternate between old bad rough roads, and road under repair. We literally end up on the gravel temporary road at times. 2 of our caravan lose front tires today,...

Feb 25, 2009 - A Free Day!

I stayed in camp, while Linda went with some of the group to see the Mayan Museum. The camper needed some attention, prior to our next travel day. I resealed the driver’s side window with silicone sealer. The fresh water needed refilling, and I waited in line for the hose. At this point, my back seized up, and the work became more difficult. I know better than to sit sideways in the boat yesterday, but did anyway. Now I pay. When Linda came back we made a run to the ATM for cash. I sat in the palapa and worked on our bookkeeping, paid...

Feb 10, 2009 - San Ignacio, Belize to Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Our plans for Belize were to head to Belmopan, then turn south to Hopkins and Dangria on the coast. Last time we were in Belize we enjoyed this area, which is rather rustic as opposed to the tourist havens on the cays. We had also considered going as far south as Placencia as we have never been there. After discussing our water pump problem with Wally, the owner of Tropicool Hotel, it was clear we would be heading away from any available help by turning south. There were shops that might be able to help us, if the pump seal failed...

Feb 11, 2008 - Palenque and Pacal Votan

Left lake Bakalar yesterday morning after a GREAT PARTY at Casa Carolina!! Lots of awesome music and great people that all gave me some super info on what to see/where to stay in Palenque. I met a German lady in Chetumal named Christine and we hung out and took the night bus together to Palenque last night. Had a bit of a mishap..I dropped my camera on the tile floor at the Mayan Museum in Chetumal....MEURTE...scrambled around to find a new one. I am making up that my insurance will pay for the new one..YES! The most important part of the...

Mar 9, 2007 - Bacalar

As our merry little band band turned our backs to the beautiful Caribbean Sea and headed southwest, we splintered into a number of pieces. Three of us were seriously ill; two sick enough to require hospitalization. The diagnosis, somewhat unclear, seems to be pneumonia. The prognosis is good and we expect them to be rejoining us in the next few days. Ken has developed a nasty cough; hope he hasn't caught the pneumonia bug.... Over the next two days we will be driving almost 500 miles. The trip as planned called for a six hour driving day...

Dec 19, 2006 - Made it to Lake Bacalar

Had an uneventful drive here today, only took about 5 hours and stoped for lunch in Peto. A little rainy an overcast but the place looks wonderful and quiet. Unpacked all are stuff and Tuxedo is in heavan here, he can really race around and of course he hit the lake first thing. The water is crystal clear and warm. It's kind of like a beach resort town, the water is not saltwater and can hardly wait to take a swim tomorrow. Jimmy looks after the place we are renting while we are here and he seems like a great guy. Him and his wife are from...

Mexico For 3

Aug 22, 2006 - On the Road again!

Apr 8, 2006 - Mexican/Belize border, Chetumal

Getting from Belize to Mexico is easiest by going through the border town of Chetumal, Mexico. It isn't the most interesting of places so we were happy to be passing through it, only using it as a place to change buses on our way to Tulum. As is the way with this type of travelling, our plans didn't quite work out. It all started going hay wire at the border. When going through borders here you have to first go though the emigration of the country you are leaving. Here they stamp your passport to show you are exiting their country. You then...

Linda and Donal 2006

Aug 17, 2005 - Chetumal, Mexico

17.08 (KtH) We caught the 8.30am water taxi to Belize City and got caught in a big rain storm. The boat was a large open speed boat. All we had to protect us from the pelting rain was a sheet of tarp which we held above our heads. The rain was pelting and managed to make its way through the tarp. The water that poured from the tarp ran down the vinyl seat totally saturating my shorts. We both arrived at the marina with wet dripping shorts, while miraculously the other side of the boat managed to keep dry under their tarps. We definately...

Dec 12, 2004 - Chetumal Museum and the ride to Bacular lagoon

The City of Chetumal on the Caribbean Sea and Bacular Bay: Dec12 Today I am in the city of Chetumal. When I l left Kohunlich I dropped down into the flat plains of the coast and found fields of sugar cane as far as the eye could see. The highway was exceptionally good after passing into Quintanna Roo state. They were working on the road from Xpujil to the state line and it was a mess. Big trucks were tearing up the road faster than they could get if fixed. It was only 22 K into town. Found a small hotel, El Dorado right next door to the...

Two months in Mexico

Jul 26, 2004 - Chetumal, Mexico

We drove here from Placencia, just to stop off for the night. Chetumal is a nice town right on the Caribbean, and has Mayan ruins nearby. We plan on leaving early in the morning and heading for Palenque. We should be back in the States within a week. The website will turn off on Aug. 1.
