Jun 11, 2008 - Halo from Cancun MX

After years if advoiding flying I have to confess that our experience today was completely enjoyable. James, our son, picked us up at 6:15am and got us to DFW the required two hours before departure. The porter took our luggage and passport, went to the counter and got our boarding passes and luggage tags without us standing in the line. John rewarded him with a hefty tip. We were one of the first to arrive at the gate and were joined shortly by our dear friends Gloria and Travis Blair. The gate attendant took the original borading passes...

Jun 9, 2008 - Obsession with shopping leads to sore feet and arse.

We thought this morning that we'd take a walk to the flea markets we saw driving into our resort. We had no idea where it was, or how far it would be, or even what it looked like. About 2 kilometres into the walk, we decided that we had probably passed it already, so we might as well walk into Cancun city centre, so we wouldn't have to come back. A four kilomatre walk in total. Why does it feel like I'm doing more exercise here than I do at home? Because I am. It balances out all the buffet eating, though. We probably spent about 25 minutes...

Jun 8, 2008 - Barcelo Costa Cancun

Today was a travel day. Nothing interesting happened until we arrived at our all-inclusive resort in gorgeous Cancun. That's right. All food, drinks, mini-fridge usage, all paid up for. There are three restaurants (Mexican, Spanish, and Seafood) and a buffet. Basically, as soon as we could, we headed down to the beach to soak up some much needed sun. Lovely. As a matter of fact, I'm headed back there now. Later, suckers :) x a

May 10, 2008 - Cancun, Mexico

Woke up this morning and got ready to go. Right before heading out, I met my Australian roommate, Jess. She is super cool. We set out for the beach and did some swimming. It was a relaxing day at the beautiful public beach in Cancun (which is much less touristy than the hotel district beaches). She wanted to go see the hotels, which I had already done on another trip, so I headed back to the hotel and ended up in a not-so-good part of Cancun because I took the wrong bus. It was good to see what the locals don´t want the tourists to see. I...

May 3, 2008 - Cancún

Well today we left our little Caribbean paradise where we´ve been staying for the past 6 days and headed for our starting point hostel in downtown Cancun. Although worlds away from the recent luxury we´ve experienced, it wasn´t as bad as we expected, and even had a pool, although the electricity was down for about 4 hours so no lights or a/c for a while. At 6pm we met up with the rest of our group who we will be spending the next 22 days with. There are 15 of us altogether, 13 girls and 2 guys! We represent a fair few countries as well....

May 1, 2008 - The Mad Dash

Moving on from the wonderful time we had in Zihuatanejo. The accident put us a little behind schedule and we ended up with only three and a half days to make it to Cancun some 1600 miles away on the other coast of Mexico. Mexican roads being what they are and the fact that you really shouldnt drive at night, means that three sun-up to sun-down days would get us there with half a day to spare on saturday before we needed to be at the airport at noon to pick up my dad. Ill be honest, i dont remember much about this three days, just a lot of...

Apr 1, 2008 - Cancun

Cancun, damn it looks like America here. First of all, never take connector flights. Seriously. Losing your luggage and landing in Cancun, (32 degrees), in nothing but jeans and Adidas Shell Toes is no fun. A day later, and my firm decision to learn Spanish as I cannot talk to anyone, we finally got our bags. I now pack all needed adapters and a toothbrush with my carry on. Cancun has every chain imaginable, (Hard Rock Cafe, Planet Hollywood, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co...) and Americans and red neck Canadians love it. The people are awesome...

Feb 24, 2008 - Cancun

No photos of this place. Glad I didn`t spend my time here. It is like an American Blackpool! Waved off Big Sis this afternoon as she heads back to clear the ice off her windscreen. I am staying tonight here as well so that I would be here for her departure. My Big Trip continues early tomorrow when I fly to Mexico City then onto Buenes Aires via Dallas.

Feb 10, 2008 - Mexico- The Yucatan Peninsula

Hola! I am now in Tulum- I have been here 2 days now. Tulum is a beach resort on the Caribbean coast, famous for its ruins which overlook the ocean. Its a bit more laid back than Cancun (and slighly less touristy). I spent 3 days in Cancun which, despite its reputation for being completely taken over by bum-bag weilding overweight Americans who spend their time between all-you-can-eat-and-drink resorts and the beach, I did see a different side of it in Downtown Cancun. Downtown Cancun has a great buzz about it, and much to my liking it...

Helen's Trip 2008

Dec 29, 2007 - Cancun

Olive turns around and smiles broadly: "Thank you", she says giving me a kiss to prove her thanks, "it is beautiful and so romantic and look at the view at the ocean isn't that fantastic" and indeed it is. In the taxi up here I had still been playing down expectations: "With internet bookings it is difficult to be certain about what you will get", I said, but now I am fully prepared to accept the kudos. Mind you, it took me hours on line to sort it out, many resorts were already fully booked at the time. I'd read through reviews and...

Dec 3, 2007 - Traveling

Wow, so today I covered a lot of the country...it was an adventure. Actually, the adventure started in Guadalajara where it took us three buses to get to the airport. But it meant I only spent 15 pesos getting there, horray!! :) It was quite calm too, thanks to both my mother and Leonie's mother instilling the need to be early for trips. So we spent almost two hours in Guadalajara's airport. Which by the way, strikes me as both adorable and quite small. Everything is different, even the gates, but really adorable. Mm, at a natural foods...
