Feb 17, 2009 - The Two Cancuns

Cancun is really 2 cities. One is the normal Mexican city, crowded, full of traffic and a wild mixture of buildings. The other is the hotel zone, located on a strip of land jutting out into the Caribbean. We drove out to see the hotels. There is every western name represented, along with the appropriate shopping and restaurants. On the south end there are new Walmart Super Store and Sams, so we picked up some groceries while we were out. Back in camp, we got our LP gas (used for the stove and furnace) refilled and the laundry done. In the...

Feb 16, 2009 - Xcaret

For some odd reason, our tour includes a visit to Xcaret, from Cancun. Xcaret is a 1 1/2 hour bus ride south along the coast. It would have seemed to make more sense after we left, but oh well. Xcaret is an all inclusive water park. It proposes to be a eco-park, although the location is largely man made. It surrounds a cenote and the river that supplies it. Here you do the lazy river thing with mask and snorkel, bobbing along in the river looking at fish and rocks. We got in 3 meals at the dining room, as it was all inclusive. We enjoyed...

Feb 15, 2009 - To Cancun

The road to Cancun actually starts in Merida. It is a modern highway, and we were able to cruise along at about 70 mph for the first time since Texas. It made the trip very quick. We have been struggling along with bad coach batteries so far. The RV engine has one battery, and the house part has 2 others. We are unable to run lights at night without using our generator. We left for Cancun early, and found both Walmart and Sams. Sams had 2 batteries of the type needed, and shortly we had fixed our problem. How nice it is! The campground here...

Feb 15, 2009 - Playa del Carmen to Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico

After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel and a walk though the small local market, away from the tourist area, we loaded up and headed for Cancun. The stretch between Playa del Carmen and Cancun has even more huge resorts than we had seen coming from Tulum to Playa del Carmen. Then we turned onto the hotel strip at Cancun. Wow! We have not been to Las Vegas for many, many years but based on what we see on CSI, this is just like it except the beaches are real. The hotels and resorts along here are out of this world. And there are so many! We...

Feb 11, 2009 - Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Today we decided to take a day to clean up the bike, fix a few little things that have been neglected and assess the work we may need once we get to Cancun. We started with a little internet research. I needed to find out if there was a nut missing on the suspension or whether it was a tapped casting and just looked like it needed a nut. There is a BMW dealer in the USA who has parts fiches on line for all makes and models (Max BMW Motorcycles). I use this whenever I need a part to ensure I am ordering/receiving the correct part. It also is...

Feb 5, 2009 - Cancun

Hi everyone. We are now in Cancun. Well, old Cancun. Not the tourist Miami Beach that all the tourists go to. We may drive out there to see Cancun but we have other items on the itinerary. We have a good internet connection and I may get time to abuse it and send some pictures up to the web site.

Dec 27, 2008 - Cancun

Saturday December 27…10:15pm We left the Coba ruins carpark just before 8am. We headed out on the side road that links up to the main road to Cancun. It was a very narrow raod, and we had to slow down and pull to the side for every car and truck that came our way. Fortunately, it was not a busy road, but it still took us about 3 hours to do the 160 km’s to get to Cancun. Although we did stop for S&G to buy gasoline, and we both needed propane as well. Speaking of propane, S&G were ahead of us at the pump on the outskirts of Cancun. It’s a...

Jun 21, 2008 - Cancun via Tulum

Another travel day today but we managed to stop for the afternoon in Tulum half way to Cancun from Bacalar. We caught a taxi with Pauline and Claire to the Tulum Mayan Ruins on the coast. It was such a scorcher of a day (39 degrees) that we powered past the ruins and went straight to the sandy beach with fab crystal clear waters for a swim! It was lovely to cool off before heading through the ruins back to the town to Tulum. We had a nice lunch with Pauline and Claire before heading on the bus up to Cancun. That evening we went out for our...

Jun 21, 2008 - Bacalar-Cancun Mexico

Early start for some of us to get to the optional Mayan ruin at Tulum. The only Mayan ruin which is situated on the beach. Took some pictures and then went for a swim in the sea, absolutely fantastic blue water, like the stuff of postcards! Tooka bus to Cancun in the late afternoon arriving at about 7pm Went out for dinner in the evening and ended up in a Karaoke bar. Highlight of the evening listening to Stewart sing Alice Cooper – Hilarious! I ended up doing “One” and “High and Dry” as well as an attempt at “Don’t stop me now” to keep the...

Jun 12, 2008 - Cancun Summary

Just thought I'd do a quick summary of the rest of my time in Cancun. Apart from spending alot of the time on the beach trying to get a tan (I still look like uncooked chicken), we got a fair bit of shopping done (surprised?). On one of the days we walked to a shopping centre we'd heard was in the Hotel Zone. It was 8 kilometres away. And when we got there, the shops didn't open for another half an hour! There was an aquarium inside the centre (it was one of those outdoor mall type things), and the whole centre was located on the edge of...
