Dec 6, 2011 - Doing Cancun Like A Local...

Hola Everyone, There was tropical rain early in the a.m. It rained for at least 3 hours this morning, maybe longer, but by 6:00 a.., the rain had stopped, the clouds were starting to clear and the sun broke through. Even with the clouds, the sunrise was beautiful. Today I did Cancun like a local. What I mean by that is that I took the bus to Walmart to buy groceries and a few other things, then later I hopped on the bus again and went to the major flea marker here,...Market 28. At Market 28 I bought souvenirs, and of course things for me....

Sep 2, 2011 - Whale Sharking and other adventures

Heys guys! So right after we wrote our first update, we ran into an incoming gaggle of GAP-ers (people our age on the same kind of tour) who were thinking of going snorkeling with whale sharks and needed two more bodies in order to book it. Of course, we jumped on the chance! Whale sharks migrate annually and are only found off the coast of Cancun from the end of July to mid-September, so we JUST caught them! For those of you not familiar, these particular beasts are very large (8-15 meters = up to 50 feet long) but are vegetarian and very...

Jul 1, 2011 - Posh Hotels and Picky Lizzards.

Cancun 01/07/11 Posh hotels and picky Lizards. It was a short flight to Cancun where we then caught a bus to the town centre and book into a hostel. In the town of Cancun is where the cheaper hostels and hotels are. The next day we took a local bus to see the Caribbean and where the expensive hotels are to be found, Marriott’s and Hiltons. The sea was warm and the sunshine bright. The hotels here are huge; they seem to stretch for miles. The swimming pools have endless rivers and lagoons connected via bridges and bars dotted along the...

3rd Gap Year

Jun 6, 2011 - Mexico

We arrived in a very hot Mexico City on Thursday night, the 12th of May. We had a pretty relaxed night and on Friday we went on a tour of the close by Aztec ruins, the Teotihucan Piramides. Very impressive, very hot and alot of climbing. They are a pretty amazing sight considering they were built in approximately 400BC, without the use of the wheel. After our full day tour we decided Mexico City needed another day, so we extended our stay. Saturday was when we got our first true taste of Mexico City, District Federale. Our hostel was...

Year of Awesome

Apr 26, 2011 - Cancun

Mar 25, 2011 - Cancun, Mexico

3/25 – 3/31 On the 25th it was time to move on. We took a taxi at about 10:30 AM to the ferry. The ferry left at 11:00 and in a half hour we were in Playa del Carmen heading for the bus station. We just made the 12:00 bus to Cancun and, after another taxi ride, arrived at our new home, the Park Royal Pyramids in Cancun (total trip time was three hours). This is also an all-inclusive resort and is very similar to the one in Cozumel. The rooms do not have balconies and our view is of another building. The resort has two pools and two...

Mar 10, 2011 - A day of rest

A day at the hotel relaxing. Tried to sunbathe on the beach and, of course, a thunder storm rolled in. Spent time in the local area going to all the shops and trying to make deals. Lots of haggling. Took a taxi in to the town itself and spent a couple hours looking at local crafts. Pretty much the same as everywhere else. Back to the hotel and watched a wedding where the bride and groom walked off into the ocean and dove in the pool - still in their wedding clothes. A final meal at Mex Extreme and a walk on the beach - got to see the belt...

Jan 30, 2011 - Revival

People can you feel it? Love is everywhere -Allman Brothers You know us. I don't think we've ever been labeled as religious zealots. Our own hybrid beliefs are exactly who we are: God fearing mutts. So after an unprecedented release of adrenaline, endorphins, and good vibes over the last few days, it feels appropriate to pause here for a few moments. It's Sunday and I've got the pulpit. Stand back cause this is as gospel as I get... To be here, right now, experiencing these amazing things makes me very thankful. I've felt more humbling...

Jan 29, 2011 - Cancun, Mexico

Ola! Larry and I flew out from Dallas Fort Worth at 5:15 pm Friday, Jan 21. Super Shuttle picked us up right from our door. The driver was from Ethiopia. He had been in the army under Haile Selasse and escaped 19 years ago to the Dallas area. He had to leave his wife and boys. He has not seen them since. He can't go back and they can't get out. His sons are 30 and 28 now. Kind of sad but he says they are all doing very well. The flight was uneventful and when we landed we met up with a representatives from Best Day, who took us to our...

Jan 23, 2011 - First Look

Like pure water, clean air, and good food, music is a driving force in my life. If I was stranded somewhere like Survivorman, as long as I had a headset & a live recorded Grateful Dead show and I WILL get by. Music is the soundtrack to life and can enhance any scenery for me. And since I'm comitted to writing this trip blog, I say this particular scene calls for an expert on Caribbean relaxation. Mr Parrothead himself, Jimmy Buffet's "First Look" Fun tickets in my pocket, visions in my brain Grand father always told me if I went down I...

Sep 29, 2010 - Cancun

I have made it! And after gathering a few "medicinal" supplies in the wee small hours, thanks to the bleary eyed OXXO (think 7-11) attendant, I have slept!:-) The journey went almost off without incident: Whilst in L.A airport, I was alert to the expected pink elephants, but not much else. So intent on avoiding the elephants, I also avoided picking up my wallet from the little security box after it had been through the x-ray machine. It took a full five minutes for me to do the "passport, ticket, wallet" check, and retrace my steps to the...
