Jan 29, 2013 - Oaxaca
@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND I've taken some excerpts on Oaxaca from Wikipedia: Oaxaca is located in the foothills of the Sierra Madre at the base of the Cerro del Fortín. The city relies heavily on tourism, which is based on its large number of colonial-era structures as well as the native Zapotec and Mixtec cultures and archeological sites. Oaxaca, along with the archeological site of Monte Albán, was named a World Heritage Site in 1987. The city of Oaxaca has long been considered "Mexico's culinary capital." The most notable aspect of Oaxacan...

Jan 19, 2013 - La Crucecita, Mexico Jan 17 - 19, 2013
Jan 17th was a dreary day in La Crucecita for Patti. Somehow I caught the flu, and was really really sick. I couldn’t venture too far from the hotel room, if you know what I mean. Turkey walked to the ocean in Santa Cruz, then back to the Super Che for Electrolytes, and back to the hotel. I slept for most of the day, so off he went again. To where, I don’t know. Jan 18th I was still a little under the weather, but met up with friends that we met down here last year, Diane and Neil from Saskatoon. We had lunch and beers (and water) at a...

Jan 16, 2013 - La Crucecita, Mexico Jan 14 - 16, 2013
Hola! Hablar con mi esposa! That’s what Turkey is saying here, as we walk the streets and are hit up by the vendors. Talk to my wife. I didn’t know this, but they all smile at him and then bombard me when I come by. Lol. Jan 14th we decided to walk to the Tipsy Blowfish for lunch. Those of you who have spent time at an all-inclusive in Huatulco may have happened upon it. So…….we walked 6 km up hill, all the way to Dreams and area. Alas, the Tipsy Blowfish was not there anymore! Bummer! Instead, found a little restaurant that had a limited...

Jan 13, 2013 - La Crucecita, Mexico Jan 12 - 13, 2013
Turkey says his bike is crying for him, lol. Well, I got my way this time, and really loving it here in La Crucesita. The pace of life is slower than the last place, and the food is delic!! Yesterday, we walked to the beach at Santa Cruz. Oh yeah, Turkey says “follow me. I know a short cut” Yeah, yeah Turk. The last time he told me that there were crocodile warnings along the route. OK, I trusted him, and followed him up this desolate dirt road, which cut through a small mountain. We got to the top, only to see the other side of the...

Jan 11, 2013 - La Crucecita, Mexico Jan 10 - 11, 2013
3 am came very quickly, and we gathered our bags and met our ride at the gates of Villas Clarita the morning of Jan 10th. We were sad to leave, but it was time to move. A quick flight to Mexico City, a 5 hour lay over, and then another quick flight brought us to Huatulco, Mexico. We caught a taxi over to La Crucecita, another small drinking town with a fishing problem. We checked into a small hotel called Mision de los Arcos, which overlooks the town square. We were wiped, with only 3 hours sleep the night before, so headed over to one of...

I´m heading towards Puerto Escondido right now. I ran into the aussies again so I´m traveling with them. Passed through Acapulco, horrible traffic, did not want to stay there at all. Today is the Mexican independence day so we keep running into all the parades in all the small towns. Thats about all

Nov 14, 2011 - Hola Oaxaca (people not in the know might call it Wahaca)
Highlight of Oaxaca had to be the day tour which included a visit to a small workshop which produces the local Mezcal tequila like liquor which pretty much blinds you on smell let alone taste; a trip to the ancient ruins of Mitla; a visit to the widest tree in the world; and a bumpy trip to a stunning petrified waterfall (a waterfall that looks like it's flowing but has in fact entirely solidified due to mineral content - here ends today's geography lesson). We also visited some workshops in Arrazola where they make beautiful coloured wood...

Aug 5, 2011 - Oaxaca 2
Okay, a lot has happened since I have been here. I dropped my camera in a bucket of water two days ago so I am sure it is fried. I have had it in a bucket of rice covered with a towel since to see if it will work once I get the water out of the camera but I am not hopefull. I busted my toe open on the side walk the second day I was here. It is fine now but it hurts a little when I walk a lot. I have become reacquainted with insects of all kinds since my furlong in Europe. I ate at a Church{s Chicken at the bus station in Mexico City on the...

Jul 25, 2011 - Feeling sucio!!!
I sometimes wonder why parts of Mexico are so filthy? How do this happen? What is it about this place? Do people not clean? I mean, I see cleansing products all over the place. I see people spraying and cleaning things all the time. How come they can´t keep it real? When everything is dirty, you feel dirty. I feel dirty right now. I´m considering starting a power washing business to disinfect the dirt encrusted buildings and verminous streets. I also wonder why they make banana soda?? Who drinks this? Why does Mexico, and Central America...

I´m currently in Ixtepec, Oaxaca. I´m so into the name Ixtepec, Oaxaca. I enjoy repeating it over and over. It sounds so bad ass...kind of like myself! So, not much is going on here. I´ve been wandering around the town and the train tracks looking for some action. Ixtepec is very different form last summer. This year it´s been a grind digging up stories. There are very few people meandering around the tracks which is generally where they represent. With the lack of action, I´ve been spending time volunteering in La Casa del Migrante...

Jul 23, 2011 - I have to pee...
Ixtepec, Oaxaca A few blog followers have asked for a visual of the legendary taco al pastor. I have included picture #1 for your viewing pleasure. Although it is nearly impossible to avoid the formidable sound of the train, especially in small towns, I have managed to sleep through a few departures in Arriaga. Very disappointing considering La Bestia is one of the main reasons I am in the field. These departures are particularly interesting being that is is the beginning of the train route This is the most amount of people you´ll see on...
