Apr 21, 2019 - Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Our first stop was Puerto Vallarta. Very colorful and lively. We went to a tile factory and watched a man painting a beach scene on one of the tiles using only his finger as a brush. He did a great job. It was around 10 in the morning and the store across the street was already offering free margaritas if you came into his shop. We decided to pass.

Mar 16, 2019 - Happy St. Paddy's Day

Went to Walmart on one of the old buses on Tuesday and started thinking about how much fun the buses used to be. The old buses had character. The drivers babied them, (they pretty much had to, some of them were in pretty rough shape). They would decorate them, hang curtains, pom-poms, and pictures of their family. Some of them would have boom boxes on board to play music. When Nell and I first started riding the buses, (13 years ago), we would get on a bus and just ride to the end of the line. There we would get off and explore whatever...

Mar 10, 2019 - Getting to be that time of year, again

It's getting to the time of year when people start heading back home. Wednesday before last, Wendy and Henry went home. Then, this past Tuesday, Roy and Carol left us. In the next week or so, people in our building will start heading out. With each departing friend, we realize that we are getting closer to leaving paradise. It's a sad time. The months seem to have gone by much too quickly. It seems like only a week or so since we got off the plane at the PV airport and now, we have less than three weeks left. Really? Less than three weeks?...

Mar 5, 2019 - The week that almost wasn't

It is just about time I caught you all up on happenings around here. The title tells a story all of itself. Last Monday we just about had our greatest success in our trivia careers. At the end of the first half, we were tied for first place. Granted there were six teams tied for first place but, we were ecstatic. The fact that we didn't win the tie-breaker and pretty much fell on our faces during the second half, didn't dampen our enthusiasm even a little. Then, this week, we had what may be one of our worst showings ever. It's a good thing...

Feb 24, 2019 - Almost March

Our week began with us winging our way North to beautiful, sunny? Vancouver. The trip started ominously when security took away Nell's bamboo knitting needles. The same needles that have made the trip, both north and south, at least five times before. I guess it just depends on the person doing the checking. The trip itself was uneventful and quite pleasant, actually. We had rain and a little bit of snow on Tuesday but, if we had stayed in PV we would still have had the rain. One thing I learned from the trip is that I am developing an...

Feb 17, 2019 - End of week eleven

After a relatively uneventful week, we find ourselves about to embark on our second trip back to Vancouver, (for insurance purposes), tomorrow. Same airline, same flight number, time of departure, arrival, etc. etc. etc. I hope the service is a little better this time but, I doubt it. The week started off with eight of us at trivia. You'd think with that number of brilliant minds at the same table we would be able to ace a stupid little trivia contest. Alas, our brilliance got lost somewhere and we ended up with one of the worst scores...

Feb 8, 2019 - We're past half way

If I could pick my own Super Bowl pool scores, the score of 3 - 3 is not one that I am likely to pick. However, that is the score that fate provided us with and, lo and behold, it paid off to the tune of 6,250 pesos on a 100 peso bet. Thank you, Isabel, for insisting we purchase the square and allowing us to share it with you. Monday we had our Toronto buddies with us for trivia for the first time this year. Sad to say, we didn't fare any better than any other week. And this after receiving assurances that they had studied over the...

Feb 2, 2019 - I'm Baaaack!!!

Okay, I was going to do things differently but it just seemed too complicated. So, you'll have to put up with my rantings in this format. Just so you know, you won't get any videos because I don't know how to load them. On Monday we went to trivia, as usual, and did really well, at least for the first half. At half time we were only one point out of the lead. In the second half we only managed to get 10 points out of 25. That damn music category gets us every time. The team that won got 24 out of 25 in the second half, and they were already...

Jan 30, 2019 - Jan 29-30 At sea and Puerto Vallarta

Tuesday, January 29 A day at sea after our busy port days—time to chill! Time for reading in the Crow’s Nest at the front of the ship, listening to info on Puerto Vallarta for tomorrow, and of course having three meals for the day! We went to the show (a soloist, Toni Warne), and managed to get in to ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ for the movie. It was a nice tropical day sailing along the coast on the blue seas. Wednesday, January 30 Today was our final port visit, Puerto Vallarta. What a difference from our previous port! Puerto Vallarta is a city...

Jan 21, 2019 - So: that was a Super Blood Wolf moon eclipse

I think I'm finally going to catch up. The Super Blood Wolf moon eclipse happened the night before last. We didn't think we were going to get to see it. The clouds starting rolling in about 5:00 PM and by 7:00 the sky was completely overcast. Nell and I decided to take a chance and headed down to the pier about 10:00 and about 10 minutes after, the clouds started breaking up. In Puerto Vallarta the moon started going behind the earth's shadow at 9:33. so, by the time the moon came out from behind the clouds, it was about half covered. By...

Jan 20, 2019 - Tonight is the Super Blood moon eclipse

New Years Day we went for a walk on the beach to see how much garbage had been left by the late night revelers. Actually, it wasn't too bad. Mind you, we didn't get down there until after 10:00 AM so any garbage had probably been cleaned up by then. Cute sculpture near the beach this year is called, "los pescadores" ("the fishers"). Has a grandfather, grandson, and dog having a nap after a hard day of fishing with a pelican and a cat homing in on the bucket of fish. On January 10 we made our first of two pilgrimages to Vancouver for...

Jan 19, 2019 - Our amenities

The saga of our amenities, or lack thereof, is long enough to take up an entire blog all by itself. As the first line indicates, this could be a long story. In fact, I spent a whole day composing a story only to decide upon reading it over that, in the form as written, anyone reading it would not need a Nyquil to get to sleep. Let me put it this way: When we arrived we had a smelly river running down our front stairway. (picture #1) The city took responsibility and sent a crew to fix it. (picture #2) They worked hard, (picture #3) and...
