Apr 18, 2012 - Week 2 of Semana Santa

In the second week of Semana Santa we had a lot of walk-in check-ins (prior to that we were dealing with people who had made prior reservations – on the whole). We’ve continued to have some very nice people here – mostly Mexicans – but have had a couple of Americans (the Canadians have all gone home!) One of the Mexican families that stayed here was very musical (up to 20 of them were staying in a couple of different units here and another bunch were at another place down the beach). In the evenings the family would gather on the...

Apr 4, 2012 - And then there were Forty!

Well, it’s been quite a week. We had been forewarned about ‘Semana Santa’ (Easter Week, which is actually two weeks) and all along the beach and up and down the street preparations were feverishly under way to accommodate the coming onslaught. Vendors were stocking up and local customers (like myself) were getting in supplies ahead of time so as not to have to deal with the crush. One interesting sight, for me, and one where I never happened to have my camera handy when I saw it, was seeing people arriving in town with a particularly local...

Mar 27, 2012 - Life in La La land - no worries, mate!

I think the sun is frying my brain - I'm having a really hard time sitting down at my computer and focussing on writing! Let's just call it 'writer's block' and not make any reference whatsover to gin and tonics, margaritas and sunshine, shall we? We've had a number of different guests staying here now - all very nice people - so it's been very enjoyable. As of today we have six people staying overnight, but it's the calm before the storm. As of April 1st we will be full - and we have no idea exactly how many people will be crammed into...

Yes we have come to the end of this fun trip! Tomorrow we will fight out on flight 2456 with Continental Airlines out of Manzanillo airport. We are meeting a friend from a rest for breakfast and he is going to take us to the airport. Nice. His name is Mitchy and he works at the Los Carolls Rest almost next door to our Hotel. Michy lives in P.V. and plays the base in a band as well. But in the summer months he comes to Melaque to make some cash in his brothers rest (Los Carolls) that means shells. Weather keeps getting warmer and warmer ,...

Spent the last two day just hanging on the beach and around the pool. Last night we went to a very classy place for dinner called Maya Tapas Bar. I ordered the man food , Tequila prawns and Rox got us some little apps. They were great. The rest is owned by a woman that owns the Secret Cove Marina on the Sunshine Coast. They even had a live singer and guitar player from Salt Spring Island. Simone was her name and Rox got us a C.D. Tonight is Gills last night so we are going to have dinner with him and his wife Maureen. Its really warming up...

Mar 26, 2011 - Music, Sunsets & Crocks.

Yesterday we went to Barra for the day as I was hoping to chat with some sailboat cruisers from all over the world. There is a bar rest called (Sands) so we headed down for a brew. And yes I got to meet all kinds of sailors. Three from Van, and one from Washington. It was a blast. After a quite a bit of chatting, Rox was ready to kill me, we went up town and watched the sunset over the bay. It was great! Ops did I mention the Mariachi bands blowing trumpets in Roxs ear at sunset? She was ready to kill me again! LOL After sunset we met up...

Mar 23, 2011 - Baby Turtles & Birthday Party!

Had a blast yesterday as we started off with a bike ride. Next we found the leather back turtles we hatching in the sand right infront of our hotel. I got the word our and we were all down on the beach watching as little heads popped out of the sand then the flippers and then the whole turtle. The marine biologist Antonio said there were 45 eggs the size of tennis ball about 50 cm under the sand. It could take up to 5 days for all the babies to get to the surface. This was happening at night around 8 pm and about 21 came up and were...
