It is difficult to tell whether I really slept that night and as soon as we get to our hotel in Palenque I go straight to bed. ... We treat ourselves to a cab ride (as opposed to local collectivo bus) up to the access point to the Mayan city of Palenque . ... Now that we are on the Yucatan Peninsula, we have moved into Maya territory, and Palenque , built on a series of terraces in the jungle, was the westernmost of the Mayan city-states together with Tonina, its sister city and bitter rival. ... Palenque rose to great importance under the 61-year reign of Lord Pakal before he died at 81 (even though the bones found in his sarcophagus were of a younger man), and after him, under his son, Chan Bahlum, followed by the latter's younger brother, Kan Xul. ... (We saw "Palenque Rojo", the theatrical version of the story, in San Cristobal and there the ending was different. ...

But the ruins at Palenque are incredible, and they were really cool to walk around. ... Oh well, seems like something you should do on a trip like this :) So anyway, Palenque. ... They are gigantic! Very little money is put into them because they are not near the tourist resorts, but there are like 2000 buildings in Palenque. ... The jungle still has most of them, which is wonderful irony considering Palenque was built by destroying the same jungle. ...

Jun 14, 2007 - Two nights in the jungle...Palenque!
So here we are at Palenque and Damien our guide told us we were going to be staying in the heart of the jungle! I was so glad we still had our mosquito nets! It was really hot when we got off the coach, the hottest it has been I think for the whole trip. ... There were huge ants and monkeys in the trees above us! One of the girls had a scorpion in her room, it was really big and when she showed our guide the photograph, he said it was deadly!!! Anyway the next morning we headed to Palenque, the Mayan ruins lost for years in the jungle. ... May 15, 2007 - Leaving Guatamala and in to Mexico
Spent the last night in Gutamala in lovely Flores, a small town on an island surrounded by lovely warm lake water where we swam with the local people and their dogs. Palenque town was pleasant but touristy so we stayed out of town. ... Mar 10, 2007 - Palenque, MX - Edge of the Rain Forest
We woke up early this morning to a slice of rural life in Mexico. We had agreed to leave at 8 o'clock bound for Palenque, about 170 miles distant; however, we couldn't leave until Jackie gave our host family the photos she had taken of them last night. ... They were quite fascinated to see themselves on the viewer of her digital camera and even more awed by the printed photographs.We woke up early this morning to a slice of rural life in Mexico. Ich habe schon Ewigkeiten nicht mehr so gut geschlafen wie waehrend den 12 Stunden Nachtbusfahrt von Tulum nach Palenque. ... Ich haette sogar fast noch verpasst auszusteigen, wenn der Busfahrer nachdem wir schon 10 Minuten im Busbahnhof gestanden sind, nicht laut "Palenque" ins Mikrofon geschriehen haette. ... Viel vor hatte ich nicht in Palenque, meine Hauptattraktion war, mir eine tolle Haengematte zu kaufen. ...

I travelled to the little town of Palenque from Merida yesterday along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, 9 hours on the bus! It was such a mission. ... Today I went to the nearby Palenque ruins, which were completely different to theones in Chichen Itza I had been to. ...
