Our bus arrived early to take us on a tour of Campeche. We saw the fort, way above the city on a hill overlooking the bay. Their zoo is not in use, as they have just a few animals and no funds for more. Most of tour involved circling the many bastions and fortifications still standing in the midst of town, including a portion of the original city wall and it’s gates. We were turned loose on foot in the zoccolo, and went off to visit the Sea Gate, the Land Gate and the market. These 2 gates are the only remaining, and are on the same street...

Feb 5, 2009 - To Campeche

We departed Isla Aguada with fond looks over our shoulders. The drive north east (!) to Campeche followed the beach, with plenty of sun and turquoise water to see. Along the way were many small villages, beach cabanas and a few more expensive houses. There was even a condo development going in, although none of it was usable. We stopped along the way for a shrimp lunch. This village had numerous small booths along the road, each with their own version of the shrimp cocktail.
