Oct 16, 2016 - Tim's Birthday in Mulu - best day so far!

Tim's Birthday. Brek..Tim noodles, Jo toast. 'SImpson' the guide again. Did Wind and Clearwater caves - up river on long boat, stopped at local market which wasn't very busy as lots were in church (could hear them singing). Bought jewellery (approx £7) all locally made (hopefully). Tim Laska noodles for lunch. I had Chicken in spicy tom yam broth...yummy but very spicy. Oct 15, 2016 - Mulu National Park

Cock-up with shuttle bus - reception booked a cab to airport so 30 ringgit rather than 20. Flew to Mulu National Park- wonderful flight. 1 hour 35 mine. Got booked into our Garden Villa called 'Wild Banana' Straight away went on our guided tour Deer Cave (which is the biggest cave passage in the world, discovered in 1978) & Langs Cave. Watched bat exodus 3 million bats! Hiked back in dark saw giant grasshopper 8" Walked across bingo bridge to local cafe / bar. Drunk locals had zillions of empty Tiger Beer cans ao their table. Oct 14, 2016 - Last night in Kuching - The City of Cats

Got River Boat to Fort Margherita but dodgy couple of hoods hovering so turned back. Took pics around Kuching - The City of Cats. Went to Drunk Monkey. Met Adrian, Cheryl, Jerome etc. Yummy take away, rice and chicken with 3 sauces in bags from Aladin's. Chinese wedding party celebrating in corridor outside our room. 4 - 6 am VERY LOUD. Aprox 20 people. Phoned reception twice! - Eventually got refunded for this night (November).

Oct 13, 2016 - Orangutans

Ooh Haa Tours took us to Semenggoh Orangutans Rehab Centre & Anna Raise Longhouse - great trip 4-5 hours £58 Inc tip. Had very hot Mee in shopping mall, couple of beers in Drunk Monkey and 3 vegetable spring rolls ... Cold in opaque a white slimy edible bag! Hmm. ..

Oct 12, 2016 - Kuching

Wandered around Kuching looking for laundry (& for experience). Did washing for £1.18 (6 Ringets)Inc powder, Didn't risk tumbler (shrinkage) so hung in window of posh hotel. Wirked fine. Would have been £3.70 for one pair of trousers in Hotel! Had brek which was cap compared with Grand Margherita but lux room so noodle soup and similar for lunch in shopping centre attached to hotel. (2 noodley meals less than £4.) Got tie dye shirt £2.03. Went to Drunk Monkey. Met Adrian Hodder (taffy) & Cheryl again. He has invited us to stay with him at...

Oct 11, 2016 - Waterfront Hotel - Kuching

Lovely listening to jungle. Got 10am boat, then bus to Kuching. Waterfront Hotel. Upgraded to suite free of charge. Lovely! Swimming pool is salt water and cold with only one sun bed so not happy. Tried to find a curry - not successful so had 2 pints of Guinness in Drunk Monkey. Spoke to Drunk Welsh bloke. Back to hotel knackered (neither of us slept too well) Had a glass of wine trying to get photos off TG 4.

Oct 10, 2016 - Bako National Park

Up for 7.30 brek. Off up trekking in jungle. Quite hard going up and down etc but fab scenery, monkeys,vegetation etc Tim did Ray Mears videos. Great laugh. Saw proboscis monkeys back at Base. Got more pics of Fiddler Crabs. Cold shower was great and not so cold! Boy throwing stuff at Tim on beach we watched him & his parents later in the dark heading for the spooky campsite where they will be the only residents apart from all the ants and other critters! The sign states 'Never leave your tent unattented'! Mouse or something in our room...

Oct 9, 2016 - Off to Bako National Park

Got the red bus (no 1). 7 RM for both £1.35 then boat £15 to Bako National Park - waded onto land with our packs on our backs, Saw proboscis monkeys before we'd even taken them off! £38 for accomodation both nights in very basic large damp Hut, with old rubber hose shower. Saw proboscis monkeys before we'd even cheked in!. Lots of macaque smaller (naughty) monkeys. Went exploring, Saw lots of 'fiddler crabs' which are white with one big claw. Took too much chicken at tea as thought it was 'per scoop' so mine was £4.54 (dear). Beer 12 RM...

Oct 8, 2016 - Kuching

Nice varied breakfast - shredded peanuts on the stew and pressed sandwich were my faves. Walked around shops - got waterproof bags for tomorrow -very exited! Laining most of the afternoon so bought an umbrella £3.50. Walked uptown - pint of Guinness in Drunk Monkey. (2 = RM38.00 = £7.20). Rice and chicken - 'best in town'with herbal tea £3.29 in total at Aladin's just up the road. Nearly washed our fingers in what looked like a finger bowl but was some sort of spicy soup for the rice!

Oct 7, 2016 - Flew to KL then Kuching

Up 4.45am. Crab stick sandwiches and fizzy orange for breakfast. Taxi to airport. Flew to Kuala Lumpur with Thai Air then to Kuching Air Asia. Taxi to Grand Margherita 4* with a hole in the bath! The Singer couldn't sing! Was doingLa Bamba etc...but then he did When a Blind Man Cries, Highway Star & Smoke on the Water! We heard these from our room as zonked by then!

Jul 17, 2014 - Still no orang utans, but 3 million bats!

I've finally discovered the Borneo I was hoping to experience. Not the river banks scarred by logging and the appallingly decimated rain forests (although I've seen all that too), but real jungle, albeit preserved in a national park at Mulu. As the sun set and I witnessed 3 million bats fly out of a cave in search of food, corkscrewing through the night air to avoid predators, it seemed a world away from modern Malaysia which so far has been a little disappointing. Borneo. I've been fascinated by this mysterious island ever since, as a boy collecting stamps, I discovered that the Sultanate of Brunei was not in the UAE as you might first think, but part of a land mass in South East Asia. The current Sultan is a mad filthy rich despot who's introduced sharia law so I won't be going anywhere near the place. The large bulk of Borneo belongs to Indonesia, but I am exploring the two Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah. One of the biggest draws is to see the orang-utans in their natural habitat.
