Jul 24, 2012 - Gunung-Mulu National Park

Miri is the gateway to Gunung Mulu National Park, which many consider to be the highlight of a visit to Borneo. (As an aside note, nobody in Eastern Malaysia describes his or her homeland as Malaysia. They all say that they’re either from the state of Sarawak or that they’re from Borneo). The charm of Mulu is its remoteness. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it is only accessible by air via a prop plane that lands at the park’s paved airstrip. Mulu is only a half hour flight from Miri but as soon as we took off I knew that we were...

A Whole New World

Jul 24, 2012 - Mulu-Part 2

During my 4-day stay in Mulu I tried to experience as much of the park as possible. I hiked all of the self-guided trails over the first two days, and then I turned to a guided hike on the third day. I was slightly disappointed with the limited number of trails until I learned that the rough terrain has made more trails impossible at this point. Proof of that is the fact that one of the park’s premier “show” caves wasn’t even discovered until the 1970’s. Three of the park’s four caves open to the public are quite beautiful with all sorts...

Dec 20, 2009 - Caves and Canopy Walk in Mulu

MORE CAVES today - this time we visited them by boat. Cave of WINDS was my personal favourite. it's not as big as the others but is probably the most ornate of them all. There is an incredible display of stalagmites and columns in what they have called the Kings Chamber. CLEARWATER cave.. this is a veritable labyrinth - over 150km of known cave passages. Running water goes through the cave. It's possible to walk back (the hard way) by Moonmilk Walk so we did the 5km and got drenched as the rain came down. Five caves later (6 if you include...

Dec 19, 2009 - Mulu National Park

We flew from Miri straight into Mulu national park. Scary swathes of palm oil plantations really revealed the amount of deforestation On arrival, we all checked into the Mulu accommodation. The Longhouse was surprisingly posh and the restaurant in the place was ok value and reasonable menu... The first afternoon we did various caves. All very civilised as you walk along wooden walkways so no risk of leeches or other yucky things. There are hundreds of caves in the park but only 4-5 open to the public. Limestone formations. LANGS Cave was...

Jul 19, 2007 - Gunung Mulu National Park

We have just got back from a week at Gunung Mulu National Park. Gunung Mulu is situated in the middle of Borneo, just behind Brunei, there are no roads there (well not whatyou would call a road) and it takes 2 days to get there by boat, so we chose to fly! The main reason we went to Gunung Mulu National Park was to do a hike to a place called the Pinnicles, which are limestone rock formations, and to see the caves and maybe do some adventure caving. In our last blog we wrote about how we got soaking wet out at Bako National Park and then...

Stor navigasjonskunst! 3 60...

Oceania Cruise - Pagodas and Palaces onboard the M/S Nautica Working in the travel industry and having taken many cruises I could not help but write up the first section of our cruise as a review and overview on the ship, cruise line and our experience.
