Oct 2, 2012 - Mini Van to Tawau Border Town---continue text
Minivan to Tawau for ferry to Indonesia/Kalimantan Borneo. Many, many Malaysian men smoke, constantly! Even in minibuses/vans! I read that Malaysia is the only country in the world where the number of cigarettes per capita is INCREASING! The ferry left at 1 pm. We read in the LP it was supposed to go at 9 am so we were up at 5:30 to get to Tawau ferry terminal in time after a 2 hour minibus ride. Once there we discovered it wasn't leaving til noon

Visibility was only 10-15m and there was some mild current at time, but nothing too dramatic. In fact the dives were 50/50 Mabul (more of the small things, corals, the small rays, odd turtles, coloufull fishs, apparently that's called muck diving) Sipadan (the big boys, sharks, barracuda and many turtles..) No actual pictures as we don't have the 20-grands-Nikonos photo equipment the Koreans were diving...

Dec 11, 2004 - Malaysian Borneo - Tawau
We took an early morning flight over to Tawau in Sabah in Malaysian Borneo. We were hoping to use this a jumping off point to get over to Sipadan for some diving. We managed to get a good deal from an agent in the airport for the next day so we only stayed here in Tawau for one night. Our guesthouse was friendly enough but had a huge sign saying 'NO PROSTITUTES' which was the first thing you saw when you walk through the door - nice welcome.
