Jun 30, 2010 - Sukau
30th June Up early for a 6am morning cruise. The temperature is low enough for animals to bare to move and we saw a lot of active monkeys from two differet troops/packs/heards?!? After breakfast (where I found out I may tolerate tea I it has plenty sugar) we had our jungle treck. All in all it was aproximately 100% more tame than I ever imagined. I was cooler, less sweaty, less out of breath, less bitten and with two less broken ankles than I anticipated. It was just like going on a woodland walk without the beaten track. It wasn't until...

Dec 29, 2009 - Kinabatangan Kruising
After a morning cruise we headed off on a ground safari to a nearby Ox-Bow lake. Apart from ALOT of mud (very thankful for the wellies they provided) we heard the sound of a male Borneo pygmy elephant (relatively it is the smallest elephant in the world and orignally came from Thailand). there are only 800 in the area so afraid we heard them but did not see them.

Aug 15, 2009 - Drive from Kinabatangan River to Semporna
It is about 11 p.m. this Saturday night, and i’m typing this entry in the lobby of our hotel here in Semporna, Borneo Global Sipaden Backpackers. Our 290 kilometer journey from Sukau on the Kinabatangan River to here required us to change our transport two times, but proceeded flawlessly. In addition to the passenger bus system, there is also a more informal transport system running throughout Sabah. Jeeps and mini-vans pick up passengers for a fee, thereafter dropping them off at their desired location. As a result, the passenger mix in...

Aug 14, 2009 - River Safaris on the Kinabatangan River
It is around 9 p.m., and I am writing this entry from the waterfront veranda of the Sukau Greenview B&B in Sukau on the Kinabatangan River. The tropical humidity of the afternoon has largely faded, so it is nice to sit out here and just chill. There are no noises other than the sounds of the insects in the surrounding brush and of the occasional motorboat in the distance. Very relaxing… Before I forget, I also just wanted to mention the night safari we did last night after I completed my entry. In a nutshell, the night safari was a mixed...
