Dec 17, 2010 - Ipoh & The Cameron Highlands

I left Langkawi around 11 and it took me 3 hours to get to Alor Star where I had to get a bus to Ipoh. The rain started in the cab on the way to the ferry and didn't stop for hours. The man at the bus ripped me off 10 ringgit, we squabbled for a while and he have me back 5 ringgit but after a couple of minutes of him claiming not to understand and the whole bus waiting for me I reluctantly took my seat. At the end of the day we were arguing over $2. it just annoyed me a lot that he would not just charge me the price clearly printed on the...

Dec 15, 2010 - Langkawi

Simone (from Germany) and I left Georgetown at 830am, and arrived in Langkawi around Lunch time. The sunny weather on the ferry over had made us a bit excited but it was short lived as by the time we were in the taxi to take us to Pantai Cenang, where we were staying, it had started to pour down! We booked in to Daddy's guest house and waited out the rain, when it settled a bit we went for a wander around the streets. My first impression of Langkawi was not great. The main strip is not very interesting and it decked out with wide roads and...

Nov 7, 2010 - Langkawi

I arrived in Langkawi after a four hour boat trip and found a cheep room at a guest house in Kampung beach. Did I mention that it's HOT here. The beach is nice but a bit touristy . The rest of the day I just walked around and hung out on the beach. I looked into the boats to Phuket. You can take them but you need several days. I did not think I wanted to sit on a boat that long and I have to meet Jeff in Phuket on the 10th. So I booked a flight from Langkawi to Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Lumpur to Phuket for the 9th. Then I headed for the...

Oct 31, 2010 - Langkawi (Malaysia)

Langkawi is an island off Malaysia. Stayed here from the 31st October until the 22nd November. We rented a little house two bedroom, living room and kitchen for a couple of weeks just ten mins walk to the beach. We totally just chilled out here. Bought lots of food veg, fruit, meat and went cooking like mad. Our day consisted of getting up squeezing fresh orange juice having big breakfast then going to the beach, after come home have lunch maybe go for a walk later have dinner with everything except rice. Rice was banned for our time in...

Sep 19, 2010 - I've stayed in every blue light cheap hotel ....

Can't win for trying Dust off those rusty strings just one more time Gonna make them shine .... It's tough to follow an act like The Ritz-Carlton. Not to complain or anything but since my epic week in luxury it seems like I just keep ending up in one dusty, dirty, moldy, run-down hotel room after another. Fortunately for me there's been enough exploring to do that I haven't really needed to spend much time inside. I flew out of Kuala Lumpur into Penang. Penang is a huge island off the north western coast of Malaysia that is home to a...

Jul 2, 2010 - Langkawi, most beautiful

These are the best beach photos. The beach was beautiful. It rained heavily several times and the power went out at our hotel (hut) room and we think some animal was trapped inside with us for a while and was crying! Did not sleep. A tree fell during the storm in front of our room. We took a hike up to a waterfall, up 600 or so steps in the rain. Aiden got chased by monkeys and when he ran he got trapped by more monkeys. I saw lots of Hornbill birds in the mornings.

Jul 1, 2010 - Payar Island Snorkelling

This was the most adventurous part of our trip. We took a 2 hour ferry ride to Payar Island to snorkel at a coral reef. The boat trip was a bit rough, and 3 of us got very sick. When we got to the reef platform it was raining heavily. Luckily it stopped and we did some snorkeling an saw some sharks. When we left we took an even rougher boat ride to Langkawi Island. It was like riding a bull.

May 23, 2010 - Langkawi

i'm always prepared, that a ferry-ride might not be my favorite part of the day...but i didn't expect this! olli (who was in the dorm with me and robin on penang) and i took the ferry together to langkawi. we already should have been worried about the amount of bags and bins that were on offer...on this 3 hour ferry-trip there were about 80% of the people throwing up...most of them constantly!!! we honestly didn't know if we should laugh or cry...both of us being close to throwing up ourselfs all the time. still don't know, how i survived...

May 22, 2010 - i need to get the hell outta here!!!

lol, yeah, i know, rather dramatic headline, just wanted to make sure you're all awake. been in langkawi for 3 days and just want out now. its just a victim of mass tourism and not what i wanna see. beaches are absolutely packed all day every day with 50 odd jetskis on the go, speedboats everywhere and parasails everywhere. all the trips are seriously overpriced and clearly aimed at tourists rather than backpackers (tourists being short term stayers in 1 place, backpackers go from place to place, usually with less money to spare) with...

May 21, 2010 - less grumpy now

quiet evening tonight. went exploring and found a really cool restaurant on the beach - little lilia's chillout cafe. met a brit couple and spent a couple of hours chatting to them, as well as roy, my new best friend in all of asia!!! roy owned the restaurant and was a friendly guy but just a bit too friendly, including hugging both me and jezz as we were leaving and looking like he was going to cry! Am now in an internet cafe thinking about my plans onwards from here. gonna try to book a trip to do something tomorrow, but everything seems...

May 21, 2010 - heavy rain and underwater world

absolutely horrible out there today, mostly tropical storms with the occasional 5 minute sunny spell. decided to take myself to underwater world, a massive aquarium in cenang. actually felt really bad, the animals in there were in tiny glas cases, giant sharks in tanks 1/2 the size of my living room, virtually every animal seemed to be having some sort of flea or tick problem (all of them busy scratching or chewing at their fur, feathers or skin). At 40 ringit, it was damn expensive but also left me feeling like smashing the tanks, it was...

May 20, 2010 - malaysia - pulao langkawi

...yes, u got it, malaysia!! had to go 10km across trang to get to a bus station, turned down the luxury of an a/c bus and instead decided to travel with the locals on a bus apparently made of tin and wood!! after a sweaty 4 hour journey (in which i was the only westerner!) i eventually got to satun on the coast of thailand. then had to do another 10km tuk tuk drive to a ferry port and eventually got a ferry to langkawi at 4pm, arriving here at 5:30 and eventually finding somewhere (a bit grim) to stay at about 7pm. really weird here, the...
