Oct 4, 2019 - Luxembourg

Another country! Luxembourg is a small country surrounded by Belgium, France and Germany. And those are the languages all the people speak, plus English of course; almost everyone speaks English these days. It is mostly rural, with the dense Ardennes forest and nature parks in the north, rocky gorges of the Mullerthal region in the east and the Moselle river valley in the southeast. Its capital, Luxembourg City, is famed for its fortified medieval old town perched on sheer cliffs. The City is also one of the four official capitals of the...

Jun 27, 2018 - Luxembourg

The idea of seeing five snack-sized countries in a little over a week seemed great in the abstract, but when I was driving the rental car around and around the airport trying to figure out how to get going, I began to have my doubts. I don’t usually drive when I am traveling abroad. For one thing, it is expensive. Almost no place gives you free parking. Gas is a lot higher in Europe than in America. And the tolls are ridiculous. Still, I think my biggest concern is that I don’t really know how to drive. The signs are not familiar. Can you...

May 26, 2018 - Dijon, France and Luxembourg

Last night we walked past the cathedral to Place Palais. The palace of the dukes is there. It is u-shaped, white and has statues along the top. Across from the palais are semicircular buildings. All our white. At one yime they were government buildings but now house a hotel and restaurants. Around the edge are numerous outdoor restaurants. Between the tiles were lines of playful fountains. Later, much later the jets changed color as they continued dancing. Little children jumped through them attempting to stay dry. We stopped for an...

Nov 2, 2017 - Luxembourg City

We took the opportunity to drive through Luxembourg on our way home from the Black Forest. We spent the day in the main city, also called Luxembourg, that was filled with surprises for both of us. For centuries, Spain, France, Austria and Germany turned Luxembourg into one of the most fortified places on earth, the so-called Gibraltar of the North because of its major strategic position on the European chessboard. The city was bombed badly during WWII, so the downtown core has been completely rebuilt, but not in the old style, but in...

Jun 25, 2017 - An old quarter and a castle

It was bad enough that LL got up at 0430 for something and I could not fall back to sleep. Worse was the 0530 alarm call. The phone was near my bed so I let him get up to answer it. He goes into the shower and his alarm then goes off...at 0545. Some people are anal re a hotel wake up call to begin with. There hasn't been a day when we have not been up by 0600, frankly well before. LL has this nightmare of being at a buffet after someone else has sampled first. His list of foibles is long. The hotel has a bit of an art gallery, albeit modern...

Jun 24, 2017 - On to Luxembourg

Not as cool in the room last night but not bad either. Will be doing some resting on the three train legs today. My worry wart roomie had set his own alarm for 0545 even though he did most of his packing last night and only needed 25M or so in the loo. He has a bad habit of taking all the shower gel, failing Sharing 101 basics. Got the blog done by 0630 and showered. Brekkie was expectedly fine. Stan down a bit early, noting the 'sparkling conversation' at brekkie. His great contribution was noting the dehumidifier made lots of noise. It's...

Jun 18, 2016 - Day 15 cycle tour. Luxembourg City rest day

Rest Day Took my bike to be repaired and the guy was fantastic. Fixed the issue by raising the mudguard. Then proceeded to clear the bike, chain and cassette, and oil it. He made small adjustments to gears, straightened the handlebars, adjusted my brake levers to better suit my hands, oiled pedals. He was fantastic. Then didn't charge me because he liked what I was doing re the bike ride!!!!! Afterwards explored the city by bike then met Leanne and Dawn for lunch (by chance I stumbled on a vegetarian GF place! We all walked the city after...

Jun 17, 2016 - Day 14 Cycle Tour Nittel to Luxembourg city

Overview A mixed day of weather and luck. Cleaned mud off our bikes and oiled chains before leaving hotel. Cycled in overcast weather along the Moselle with lovely views of cliffs and pretty towns nestled into the terraced vineyards along the hills. Once we'd crossed into Luxembourg we followed a bike path next to the road. Suddenly my tyre started scraping something under the mudguard. It sounded bad. So a longish break to try and clear mud and small stones. But still no luck. A helpful man arrived with a pair of pliers and bent the...

May 3, 2016 - Full day driving

Today is the 'J' day𯘊. I am leaving Grenoble for a far away country. It is north from Grenoble. I should leave my home early morning so I had to set the alarm clock (not usual). Wake up is good but still many last minute staff to prepare so half hour late and finally the camper did not start because of the battery so another half an hour delay. A delay bacause I set my trip in Blabla Car application to propose driving people and I have a guy in Luxemburg suscribed that I have to drive to Cologne. So he expects me to pick him at the station...

Jun 20, 2015 - Lovely Luxembourg Part Two

Luxembourg is such a beautiful country it beckoned me to include a second round of photographs and information. The lively square reminded me of a movie set with small cafes, numerous patisseries (french bakeries) and shops. I couldn't help but document these fine confections. I was surprised to see the pets that walked into these places beside their owners as if it was just another ordinary day. The architecture and flowers were perhaps the most striking of all. Many of the buildings had small wrought iron balconies and flower filled...

Jun 19, 2015 - Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

Update by Vickie: It was a cool summer day at a high of 60 degrees. We caught up on a little sleep and decided to go into the little country of Luxembourg. It was a pretty drive through the Rhine River Valley. We also went several times on the Autobahn. We encouraged Pa to get the car moving. We giggled as we got up to 102 mph. People were STILL passing us. Luxembourg was a beautiful place with lovely architecture and high end shops like Cartier and Gucchi. The French candy stores and bakeries were beautiful. We accidentally turned down a...
