After 2 nights in Belgium we headed to Simona’s Aunties place in the Black Forrest Germany. This was about a 9hr drive via Luxembourg where we stopped for lunch. It was a public holiday in the middle of the week for the feast of the assumption, which had much of the EU, closed for the Christian holiday. We parked the car and found a lovely little square in the centre of the town, "town square" which had some market stalls selling everything from cheese and smallgoods to cooked fish and sausage. We rode a bus from Issel, Germany, (on the Mosel River) into the tiny country (1,000 sq. miles) of Luxembourg to its capital city, Luxembourg City. This small country has over 500,000 population and the world's 2nd highest avg. income ($81,000/person) after Qatar. Made the short journey into a new country for us. Luxembourg, officially the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is only 82km x 57km and the country has a population of around half a million. German, French and Luxembourgish are the official languages. When we were in France the price of diesel fuel was 1.40+Euro, in Germany it was 1.30+Euro, when we crossed into Luxembourg we found the price was 1.19 Euro. Well, this last week has seen us in 4 countries – only in Europe could this happen. Things we have learned: • If you are not over budget before you enter Switzerland, you certainly will be by the time you leave. On the reccommendation of a certain Grace Smibert we headed to Luxembourg pretty much entirely for the "famous" mousse. We were utterly disappointed, and would like to quash Grace's wild rumours about Luxembourg being famous for mousse, or even having any at all.Despite the weather (and the mousse) Luxembourg city is a pleasant place, and surprisingly rather multi-cultural. We visited the Notre Dame, and the Bock fortress, but other thn that there"s not a whole lot going on.

From October 14th-16th I visited the Whitehouse's in Luxembourg! Paul, Sandrine, Chloe, Lucy, and Charlotte were all so welcoming to have me! We’re taking a day in Luxembourg on the way back to London. The drive here from Prague was about seven hours. Andy spent his junior year here during college, so has a little nostalgia to indulge. Our hotel is right on one of the main squares of the old town. Fortunately, too, the heat wave has broken. It was 98 here yesterday – a hot night for sleeping. The city's huge summer fair starts tonight, so we are going to check it out before driving on the the Calais-Dover ferry in the morning.

Today is my birthday and also exactly one year to the day I left the safe surroundings of Luxembourg and headed West to the US. Many things seem to have changed here but not toooo much.
