Aug 15, 2012 - Luxembourg
After 2 nights in Belgium we headed to Simona’s Aunties place in the Black Forrest Germany. This was about a 9hr drive via Luxembourg where we stopped for lunch. It was a public holiday in the middle of the week for the feast of the assumption, which had much of the EU, closed for the Christian holiday. We parked the car and found a lovely little square in the centre of the town, "town square" which had some market stalls selling everything from cheese and smallgoods to cooked fish and sausage. Got to love the sausage in Europe! Don’t know...

We rode a bus from Issel, Germany, (on the Mosel River) into the tiny country (1,000 sq. miles) of Luxembourg to its capital city, Luxembourg City. This small country has over 500,000 population and the world's 2nd highest avg. income ($81,000/person) after Qatar. First we spent a somber 1 ½ hours at the American Military Cemetery to learn about the Battle of the Bulge in 1944, General Geo. Patton, and our servicemen and one woman buried here. Vantage donated a floral wreath which one of our passengers, 91-yr-old Bill Jones, laid at the...

Made the short journey into a new country for us. Luxembourg, officially the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is only 82km x 57km and the country has a population of around half a million. German, French and Luxembourgish are the official languages. When we were in France the price of diesel fuel was 1.40+Euro, in Germany it was 1.30+Euro, when we crossed into Luxembourg we found the price was 1.19 Euro. There were heaps of petrol stations just over the border, so everyone must fill up just before they leave or as they arrive in the country - I...

@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND I will write about our experiences in Luxembourg soon, but for some general information, here are some exerts from the Lonely Planet – Belgium chapter on Luxembourg: Tell your Belgian friends that you’re nipping off for a banking weekend and they’ll guess you’re Luxembourg bound. What might surprise them, however, is the fun you’ll have when you get here, except on Sunday, of course, when the city falls asleep. Which European nation, just 84km long, rates amongst the world’s three richest countries? Remarkably, given...

Nov 12, 2011 - When you meet a 5,300 year-old man..........
Well, this last week has seen us in 4 countries – only in Europe could this happen. Things we have learned: • If you are not over budget before you enter Switzerland, you certainly will be by the time you leave. If you are shocked by diesel prices of EURO1.50 in Italy, the price of EURO1.99 ($2.88 per litre) once you cross the border into Switzerland will take your breath away. • The flip side of this - if you can gain enough speed on the highway in France, you can run out of gas and coast the last 50 miles into Luxembourg where the price...

On the reccommendation of a certain Grace Smibert we headed to Luxembourg pretty much entirely for the "famous" mousse. We were utterly disappointed, and would like to quash Grace's wild rumours about Luxembourg being famous for mousse, or even having any at all.Despite the weather (and the mousse) Luxembourg city is a pleasant place, and surprisingly rather multi-cultural. We visited the Notre Dame, and the Bock fortress, but other thn that there"s not a whole lot going on.

Oct 27, 2011 - Luxembourg!
From October 14th-16th I visited the Whitehouse's in Luxembourg! Paul, Sandrine, Chloe, Lucy, and Charlotte were all so welcoming to have me! From the moment I walked through the door, Charlotte gabbed my ear off. She was so excited that "Cole's other cousin" had arrived and was staying for the weekend. While visiting them, Sandrine took me to Metz, France; about 30 minutes from Luxembourg City. There we toured the city, shopped, and ate authentic French crepes! My crepe was SO delicious with cheese, tomatoes, and eggs; I cannot wait to be...

Oct 18, 2011 - Meandering along the rivers
October 15th Left Metz this morning under a cloudless blue sky, bit chilly though. We enjoyed looking around the bustling indoor market – the range of food was astounding and not just for tourists. We probably didn’t do justice to Metz. It had a really nice feel but there is no doubt we are getting a bit citied out which is why we didn’t go to Strasbourg and why we’re not going to Luxembourg as the route says. Instead we’re travelling up the Moselle at least to Triere which is Germany’s oldest town. You would think that finding the Moselle...

Oct 6, 2010 - UPDATED -- Leaving Luxembourg
Marilyn"s Musings We finished our trip through the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg by driving along the Moselle through their wine producing area -- not to be confused with Germanys wine producing area just on the other side of a rather narrow river. Then we visited Germany -- not by design -- Bob asked what town we were heading for and when I looked up from the map to check a sign, all the license plates on the cars whizzing past us had a “D” on them instead of an “L”. We had made a wrong turn about 25 kilometers ago; by the time I found us on...

Oct 4, 2010 - Luxembourg City
Marilyn's Musings We just finished with three days in Luxembourg City in a lovely Sofitel where weekend rates were wonderful which was a good thing given I spent the three days in the room. Getting sick is no fun -- getting sick in a foreign and is even less. But I think I've rejoined the land of the living again and we should be more regular with our entries now. And they might even have interesting pictures! Bob continues to narrate. . . Bob's Bits I will be writing the notes on Luxembourg City as M has been laid low with a head cold,...

Aug 19, 2010 - Lovely Luxembourg
Oh my goodness it is SO HOT that I have lost the ability to type. TTFN. The Dog Blog Chapter 2 By Douglas H.C. Martland What ho, chaps! What are those two like? They moan when it's raining, they moan when it's too hot. They should try this travelling lark wearing a thick, black, furry coat. Not so much fun I can tell you. Luckily, they do tend to scalp me every few weeks to keep me sleek and handsome, but even so. 30 degrees in fur? I do like this Luxembourg place, though. Lots of new smells, lots of new walks, and most importantly a river...

Jul 7, 2010 - Leaving Luxembourg
My last day in Luxembourg is today so I decided to walk into the next town to find a bottle of wine. After several hours of walking I found no wine to buy. I stopped to ask a local man where to buy some and he said they where all closed today and I would have to try tommorow. Maybe I can pick some up on the train journey back to Amsterdam. While I was talking to the man someone rode by on their bike wearing a Saxo Bank uniform. He pointed at the rider and yelled Frank, who turned and waived back. The rider was Frank Schleck who missed the...
