Feb 7, 2004 - Vientiane, the Sandalwood City

We have no idea why it's called the Sandalwood City, even after spending 3 days here. Anyway, sounds nice and it was a great to rest after noisy/hectic Vietnam. It was the most relaxed capital city we have ever been to, more like a country town. Very little traffic, not much noise and the people are so chilled out. One day it rained quite heavily and if you would have wanted one, it was very hard to find a tuk-tuk or taxi - we think that they had just decided to stay in bed due to the rain. Dec 29, 2003 - Laos by horror overnight train

Having been unable to get a sleeper train ticket, we had 3rd class tickets on the overnight train to Nong Khai. The trip was a mere 10 hours, on wooden bench type seats. I had images on India and dying of oxygen deprivation when long after the seats in the carriages had filled up, people still poured in and proceeded to place themselves on sheets of newspaper anywhere there was a gap. Nov 28, 2002 - Vientaine

Then we all crammed into a covered truck with loads of locals to get down to Vientaine, the capital of Laos. there was some old bloke squeezed next to Heather wanking himslef despite being told off by local women and there being a monk opposite. Vientaine quite a big town with some great temples. We were in this fab hotel more like someone's super luxury house, complete with swimming pool.
