Vientiane is ridiculously laid back for being the capital city of Laos. ... It's pretty comparable to having Bala, Muskoka as your nation's capital! That said, it was a great change of pace from Hanoi and we loved the fact that we could enjoy delicious Nutella crepes with ice cream and do minimal site seeing.Vientiane is ridiculously laid back for being the capital city of Laos. ... Mar 25, 2009 - Vientiane
My second day in Vientiane was very domesticated in the morning, getting clothes repaired, hunting down camera batteries for Fran and other odds and ends that needed to get done. ... I stopped off at a few other sights as well such as Wat Si Saket, the oldest temple in Laos whose cloisters are riddled with small niches that contain more than 2000 silver and ceramic Buddhas and Patuxai, Vientiane's Arc de Triomphe. ... Vientiane is not a particularly glamorous place (and that is being kind) but at night it is really quite gorgeous, with the dim lighting casting a romantic glow and hiding the dirt and decay that is so stark during the day! Despite it's lack of aesthetic charm, Vientiane is still a very cosy city and my brief stay has been quite pleasant overall. ...

After much to-ing and fro-ing it was decided that our best course of action was to fly to Laos rather than heading overland from Cambodia. I was going to do the overland trip from Chiang Mai into Huay Xai, but change of plans and I'm now doing Laos in the opposite direction, and meeting Jade and Fran in Vientiane. ... All I could think was that I hadn't done a will before I left!! As we flew closer and closer to Vientiane, the turbulence became worse and worse, at one point we dropped so far that I became airborne in my seat, eek! I also noticed some light flashing outside, which I thought was just the lights flashing on the wing, but it wasn't, it was lightening! We were flying through a massive thunderstorm! Mick told me that all the pilots are ex-military pilots, so they are used to flying in bad conditions, and sure enough, we landed safely in Vientiane to pouring rain. ... Tomorrow, off to explore Vientiane, but from what I saw of the city on the way in, it is very small, sleepy and with a lot of things closed. ...
