Sep 22, 2009 - Slow, slow, slow your boat, gently down the Mekong

Taking the Slow Boat down the Mekong from Huay Xai in Northern Laos to Luang Prabang is pretty much a Must Do for travellers along this route. We overnighted in a little town called Pak Beng where the locals pretty much attack you as you come to shore to get you to stay in their guesthouse. ... The electricity generator shuts down there at 10pm so you are pretty much guaranteed an early night.Taking the Slow Boat down the Mekong from Huay Xai in Northern Laos to Luang Prabang is pretty much a Must Do for travellers along this route. Nov 5, 2008 - Laos

Once we crossed the river from Thailand to Laos, it was a relatively short time from going through border patrol and currency exchange, until we were aboard our second boat of the day, but this time the boat would be our only mode of transport for the next 2 days. That night we didnt stay on the boat, instead we disembarked at Pak Beng, a popular stop off point on the Mekong. ... Oct 18, 2008 - Goodbye Thailand, hello Laos

Getting a bus from Chiang Mai to the Lao border proved a bit trickier than we'd expected - looong queues for tickets, and then an even longer wait for a bus with space - it was 1pm before we left, and a 7 hour journey, so we didn't make it to the border before it closed that day. From there, we hopped on a 2 day slow boat down the Mekong to Luang Prabang, stopping overnight in Pak Beng (a village made up entirely of sleeping and eating places for the slow boat tourists). ... It was a very relaxing way to spend 2 days, and the river scenery was lovely.Getting a bus from Chiang Mai to the Lao border proved a bit trickier than we'd expected - looong queues for tickets, and then an even longer wait for a bus with space - it was 1pm before we left, and a 7 hour journey, so we didn't make it to the border before it closed that day.
