Today we intended to enter Cambodia through the Southern Lao border crossing. Then we took off walking across the island of Don Det and once we left the tourist area the countryside was quite nice and peaceful. ... Hi guys We are now in the 4 thousand island region in the far south of Laos. We are on one of the smallest inhabited islands called don det. ... I headed further south to Don Det and spent two blissful days doing nothing. ... While I was waiting for the van, he convinced me that Don Det was the better option - cheaper, no electricity, lots of dirt paths to walk or bike down, waterfalls, etc. ... This morning I took a minibus (tourist one so not nearly as exciting as my previous bus, boat or jumbo trips in Laos) and then a boat down the Mekong to the island of Don Det where I'm going to stay for a few days. ... Si Phan Don (4,000 Islands) is a lazy maze of tropical bush and palm forests islands on the Mekong. Between the two major islands of Don Khong and Don Det is a vast horizon of plant outcroppings and tree roots clumped together into small isles giving this area its name. ... Made it across the Cambodia-Laos border no problems. Was pleased to arrive in Don Det for relaxation time!! Don Det is an Island in Si Pan Dhon (The 4000 Islands). ... What a great first stop in Laos! It is the most chilled place I have been on my whole trip! There are no stresses here! The setting is beautiful with most accommodation in the form of $1 bungalows with verandas overlooking the Mekong River.Made it across the Cambodia-Laos border no problems. Was pleased to arrive in Don Det for relaxation time!! Don Det is an Island in Si Pan Dhon (The 4000 Islands). ... What a great first stop in Laos! We wanted to get some time on the Mekong, so even though we could have taken the bus the whole way to Don Det in Laos, we split up the trip. ... Don Det was instantly incredible. ... He was mostly getting high, so I'm not sure how much soul searching was actually going on, but I can't imagine anyone actually settling down in Don Det, unless they really wanted to build a dollar a night guesthouse and farm water buffalo in complete isolation. ... I figured it was just because of remote location of Don Det, in what is called the Four Thousand Islands area of southern Laos, or for anyone who hasn't been here, complete yichuppitzville. ... We spent a total of three days on Don Det, doing absolutely nothing in particular. ...

The first island we stayed on was Don Khong and we biked the 30 km road around the island sharing it with many pigs, cows, buffalo, children and carts of all sorts. I did plant some rice for Garry as it is the height of the planting season and the locals needed all the help they could get Then we got a boat to Don Det which was smaller and cheaper island. ...
