Dec 18, 2008 - Loving Laos

Hello family and friends, Okay...I believe we were onward to Laos. Our ride up the mountain was, again, a wonderful sunny, clear, and warm day. We dilly dallied our way up the mountain taking photos, soaking up the scenery and thoroughly enjoying the first traffic free road we had ridden our bikes on since the beginning. The quiet was remarkable, as if it was something I'd never heard before. No horns, no motorbikes or scooters, no buses, no trucks, no speeding SUVs or 4x4s, and did I mention no horns? It was quiet. And clear. Where the...

Aug 22, 2007 - On to the Backpackers Ghetto!

Kayaking in Luang Prbang was pretty cool, although I have to say my arms are feeling it today! We woke up in the morning and met our kayaking group for departure...found out that it was only going to be Graham, me, our guide, and one other lady...turns out it was this lady who has been somewhat of a stalker since we met her in the CHiang Mai airport....I was scrunched over at the time dealing with post poisoning, and Matt was the one who spoke with her...ever since, we've seen her everywhere! We predict she is in her early 60's , she grew...

Jun 15, 2007 - Vieng Kham

The day began ordinarily enough. We got up early and packed our bags; Nong Khiaw had been a pleasure but it was time to move on. We left our bags while we went to eat breakfast and discuss where we were going next. We met a French girl who told us that the scenery was much better and the town much less touristed where we were (in Nong Khiaw) than in the towns West, which is where we had previously intended to go. So, on a whim, we decided to travel East. We chose a town on the map as a destination for this evening and went to the guesthouse...

May 10, 2006 - White water rafting

We set off for 2 days of white water rafting in the back of a truck with our raft on the roof. The journey to the river was a couple of hours during which we skidded across the dirt road as a cow wandered out in front of us. From our launch point we carried the raft into the water and all our kit was put into dry bags and under cargo net which was lashed to the middle of the raft. There were 7 of us in the raft including the guide, and we had another local guide who acted as a scout and went on ahead to check out the rapids. It was baking...

Mar 28, 2006 - Almost blown away in Muang Ngoi...

I just read in a mail, that finally, spring has arrived in Berlin: congratulations! Finally, I do not have to have a bad conscience anymore about posting so much about my warm, tropical and sunny trip! Even more so, as I left a place for the very first time because of the weather! Yes, in Muang Ngoi, it rained a lot, there were more clouds than blue sky and one night, our bungalow almost got blown into the river... Ok, this is taking it a bit far, however, the couple in the bungalow next to ours had a very wet night, as their roof really...

Mar 7, 2006 - Phonsavanh

Sorry it's been so long. Computers good enough to put photos up are pretty scarce here in Laos. Tues 7th Mar: Took a local bus to Phonsavanh today. We got to the bas station half an hour early and Mark still had to sit in the aisle! All the way. For 8 hours. Through the mountains. Poor thing. We arrived at a tiny town with dirt streets and not much else. Found our cheapest accommodation ever though - $3. Even had a hot water shower. Very tired from the trip so early dinner then bed. Wed 8th Mar: Today we went to see the famous Plain of...
