A stop en route to the Southern Islands, only a handful of hotels and cafes though taxi drivers do manage to capitalise on the steady stream of tourists passing through - one charged us a whole dollar for driving us 250 yards to our hotel(we didn't realise it was just around the corner) and when Craig asked about his really bad mosquito bites at the local pharmacy they advised not to scratch them!

The Grand Tour

Yesterday we transitioned from Don Khong to Pakse, which is on the way back to Vientiane and also one way to reach the Bolaven Plateau. Instead of cramming ourselves back onto on of the sawngthaew trucks, seven of us got together and rented a minibus, which made for a much more pleasant ride. The Bolaven Plateau is an area that was converted to coffee and tea cultivation by the French and is also known to have some beautiful waterfalls. Jul 7, 2004 - VIP Treatment (Pakse, Laos)

We just spent the day here en route from the islands to Vientiene. We rented a room for the day (to take much desired showers and get some rest), and then left for Vientiene that evening on a special overnight "V.I.P" bus. This thing was crazy (but much appreciated!). It was like being on an airplane for all the service we got. There were "ride attendents" dressed in matching outfits who served us dinner and breakfast and some snacks in between. There was a bathroom on the bus, and the whole trip was non-stop (so we didn't have to waste...
