Jul 19, 2012 - Eagle and the Rabbit

We drove out of the valley of the unicorns to drive the southern side of Issyk-kul and head to out homestay in the town of Kochkor. Before that we had a fun day of eagles and felt. We stopped on the side of the road to meet up with a guy standing there with a massive friggin eagle on his arm.  We then followed him down some dirt lanes to a secret eagle hunting spot.  To transport ones golden eagle, you need a volkswagon polo or similar and some straps to keep the eagle down in the boot.  I imagine using the front seat of the car would shock...

May 29, 2011 - 25 May - Kochkor

We left our idyllic camping spot in Djety Oguz on 25 May for the long drive to Kochkor, a sleepy little Kyrgyz village where we are staying with a Kyrgyz family overnight. Before meeting our hosts we stopped off to see a folk group perform, watched a re-enactment of the nomadic herdsmen moving their cattle and sheep and helped them erect a yurt (we weren't very good at it!). The weather was cold and rainy so as soon as the yurt was up we moved inside for more entertainment from the singers and also a demonstration of felt making, which...

May 29, 2011 - 26 May - Ala Archa Gorge

We left Kochkor on 25 May for the drive to Ala Archa Gorge. 25 May is the last day of the school year in Kyrgyzstan and we were lucky enough to pass through a town as they were participating in their end of year celebrations. It's much the same as the assemblies we have in Australia, with the kids who were leaving getting their certificates, with lots of dancing and singing. The students who left 10 and 20 years previously also turned up with gifts for the school - the 20 year students came bearing rugs for the classroom floors while the 10...

Sep 7, 2009 - Kalmak-Ashu pass -3446m

Headed through the Kalmak-Ashu Pass it was cold again and as we got higher the ice and snow started a switch back dirt road so a pretty interesting ride but again magnificent views which is what this country is all about. At the top of the pass not having seen another vehicle for about an hour decided to brave the cold and have a squat behind a rock - as soon as I'd walked there a car came from the other direction and stopped right next to me to check out the view so had to wait - dropping ones pants in the snow is not recommended but...

Aug 12, 2008 - Kochkor via Balykchy

Leave for Kochkor by bus from N. bus station, probably should have gone to S. bus station(as LP recommends) to go via the S. shore, more interesting & the way K & T went via hired taxi. At first the 2 lane road travels thru wide open wheat fields w/ Lombardy type poplars lining both sides, combines lumbering thru the fields harvesting the grain. We're heading N. getting closer to steep mtns then turn W on a busy road thru many sm towns, boring ride, slow stopping more than moving - a redeeming factor, the AC works well. As we go more and...

May 21, 2006 - Kochkor punto com

Entonces cruzas a Iran. Y Turquia parece un paraiso de obras y servicios publicos. Pero en Iran las carreteras siguen siendo transitables y los coches avanzan aunque algunos a duras penas. Llegas a Turkmenistan y entonces piensas, Dios...

May 13, 2005 - Shyrdaks, Vodka in the Park and a Mouth Harp

Depart: Near Aral, Kyrgyzstan Arrive: Kochkor, Kyrgyzstan Overnight: Homestay - It was raining when we woke up so we had a very quick breakfast and set off half an hour early. We reached the 2,670m Kyzart pass where we stopped off for a break. After that, we unbelievably bumped into another overland truck going the other way. We chatted to the group, mainly Dutch and Belgians for a few minutes before heading off again. - After more driving we reached our destination - the small town of Kochkor, at around lunchtime. We had a quick truck...
