May 28, 2011 - 19 May - Chong Kemin Valley

We arrived in the Chong Kemin Valley National Park in pouring rain and high winds - it was freezing. Al and Juan got out to try and find a suitable place to pitch the tents while we huddled in the truck, hoping they would tell us we were going to a hotel. No such luck, they found a slightly sheltered spot and we sat on the truck while they put up an awning and a cook tent then we were off to set up our tents in the freezing cold! Though we couldn't see it at the time with so much cloud around, the surroundings were beautiful, more snow...

Oct 22, 2008 - Bishkek to Lake Issyk-Kul

By 1 PM we were off on a refreshing three hour drive to Lake Issyk-Kul. The mountains had received their first dusting of snow and at lower elevations leaves were bursting into various shades of yellow. For some distance the road passes through the Boom Gorge paralleling the Chu River that is racing down the Tian Shan Mountains toward Bishkek. Along the way you also pass a couple of large Muslim cemeteries with many interestingly sculpted headstones and grave markers. Likewise, some small scale roadside vendors offer fruits and dried fish....
