Aug 4, 2016 - Mombasa Port Jesus
The trip to Mombasa was reasonably uneventful. Except camera battery ran out! On the way I took a pile of photos of roadside shops. Here are 3 of the many. Our taxi driver (Ken again) had a ferry pass which was fortunate. one of the 4 ferries had broken down and to add to congestion there were loads of buses of school children. Not to mention a few cows grazing near the entrance road to the ferry With the pass, instead of waiting for up to four hours, we were the last in line onto the next ferry. Our destination; Fort Jesus,...Jump to full entry
Sep 16, 2011 - Tourist in Mombassa
Hey guys! It was so sad to leave the GVI project I had such an amazing time and met so many awesome people. We had the end of Expo party in Shimoni on Friday night and then came to Mombassa on Saturday. most people went home Saturday or Sunday. Stayed in the hotel till Sunday and then met the family that I have been staying with this week. Vicky seems lovely although it was kind of strange as I was under the impression that I was staying with Val yet she is apparently living in Canada so I am staying with her sister. Anyway never mind,...Jump to full entry
Oct 29, 2010 - Making the most of Mombasa!
MOMBASA, KENYA Our new friend 'British Kate' had her driver drive us to our chosen hotel in Mombasa. We found it funny (in a sick way) that she advised us not to pick one of the front rooms upon arrival (the windows all had holes in them as if a baseball or giant grapefruit had been thrown through. Funny in that none of us thought that we should not stay there, just not in those rooms. Anyway, our hotel was perfect - inexpensive, showers for really tall people (about 8 feet up?) and with a grocery store (Tusky's), Internet, Restaurant and...Jump to full entry
Oct 26, 2010 - leavin on a jet plane...well...tryin to...
It came time for us to leave Zanzibar so up we got early, had breakfast and a met a taxi to take us to the airport. We had enough money with us to pay the taxi and that was all the money we had. The bank machines in Stone Town were either broken, empty of cash or not taking our ATM cards. The day before we had to cash-over whatever Euros and Kenyan money to pay for our hotel, a few trip purchases and supper. We just had to pray that the ATMs in Mombasa would work or...well...if hotels in Africa continued to ONLY accept cash..well I guess we...Jump to full entry
Aug 6, 2010 - Kenya - Chilling in Mombasa !
Monday saw us getting up at 6.00am for our early morning flight to Mombasa on Kenya's East Coast. Mombasa's main attractions are the beautiful beaches and marine reserve that run both North and South of the city for about 50km. Although it was an early start, everybody was ready on time as Patricia & Leon in particular were looking forward to spending a few days on a beach. The one hour flight was uneventful but it did give us the opportunity to see the top of Mount Kilimanjaro just across the border in Tanzania. After an hour drive up the...Jump to full entry
Apr 3, 2010 - Tsavo East
Wednesday, March 31, 2010 Tsavo East After a buffet lunch, we collected our luggage and were ready for another safari at 4:00 PM.. I surveyed the area around my room and was intrigued by a little animal in the tree outside my balcony; I learned it was a hyrox, gray, larger than a squirrel with no tail, and rounder, John joined us again; I really enjoy what he adds to what we are seeing, like certain characteristics of the animals. The elephants turned from gray to red and are known as the Tsavo Red Elephants; they get red from the dirt and...Jump to full entry
Apr 3, 2010 - Tsavo West
Tuesday, March 30, 2010 Tsavo West We left the ship at Mombassa and boarded 8-passenger vans (6 Exploritas members, Abdul the driver and John the guide) that would take us on a 4 ½ hour drive to Tsavo West a game preserve that is home to a number of animals. Leaving Mombassa, we passed the same run-down shacks that served as road-side shops, most strewn with rubbish on the curb. Some stands are just sticks with a straw roof. Bricks are plentiful that people make with the red soil and cement them together with the same powdery clay type...Jump to full entry
Oct 12, 2008 - Mombasa
Mombasa.... What a relief after a hectic Nairobi. But man, is it hot here. We realized that the elevation in Nairobi is 1900 which makes the city rather cool. This is the heat we expected from Africa. We stayed with Sheila's cousin for a couple of days, going for long walks at Fort Jesus and at the water front - and entertaining the cousin's cute children (we learned to say
Sep 28, 2008 - Nairobi to Mombassa
Arrived in Mombassa at 4pm and the four of us were taken to Papillion Lagoon Reef hotel, it was an interesting journey going through Mombassa, a ferry ride over the estuary and past lots of villages on route. The hotel was fantastic and we had a room overlooking the gardens and pool. The beach was white powder sand with lovely coloured sea. We had a walk along the beach and were hassled by the beach boys straight away who try to sell you their wares, if you ignore them they stay but just keep ignoring is the best way.Jump to full entry
Oct 1, 2007 - Things I've learned
I have been writing sections like this in my journal whenever I see something culturally interesting so I thought I'd share them with everyone. Things I've learned in Kenya: (In no particular order) *Giraffe Saliva= antiseptic. *Kenyan students can receive Es. *Nairobians are mad at Canada (sorry to shy Americans.) *According to my school handbook: The national pastime is lying. *GM has brought Hummer to Kenya, must to local excitement. This is the new symbol of wealth and prosperity. Naturally, all political candidates have one. (Rumor...Jump to full entry
Feb 4, 2007 - Container Arrives in Mombasa
After the delay of the container in Eilat Israel, we recieved word late last week that our supplies arrived on the docks of Mombasa, Kenya and is awaiting customs clearance. Akinyi Odinga, who is one of our contacts in Kenya is working to have the container released, and transportation has been arranged for the container to make the trek to Nairobi where it will wait for the We See You team to arrive on February 22nd. Once we arrive in Nairobi, our plan is to visit the area of Makina and figure out how we can transport the medical...Jump to full entry
Oct 17, 2006 - Nairobi - 'Will be there at 4pm. Arrived at 10pm'
Was woken to be told that we are now leaving at 9am instead of 10am. Starting to piss me off, everytime that a time is set it is changed. Got ready and left for Mombassa which we were told we would arrive at at 4 - 5pm. Had to stop to pick up a spare tyre and get breakfast. Set off for Mombassa, 12hrs later arrived at 10pm. The Chinease are building a new road from Nairobi to Mombassa (Kenyas biggest port). Problem is they started in the middle and have not really got to Mombassa yet. Really a single track road into Mombassa that was...Jump to full entry
