May 5, 2012 - Petra, Jordan & beyond
Jordan We caught the local bus for a 2 hour ride to Wadi Musi (Petra), We selected the Valentine Hotel a nice family run Hotel in the middle of town. Off to the Petra site where we purchased a 3 day pass. PETRA:This archeological site was lost from the 14th century until 1812 when it was rediscovered by a Swiss traveller. Petra was chosen by the BBC as one of "the 40 places you have to see before you die". We would all agree!! Oh, my, what a wonderful find!! We walked 1200 m through a very deep narrow gorge (canyon) and at the end…. this...

May 3, 2012 - Wadi Rum
JORDAN: AQABA: Looking for a hotel in Aqaba was a bit of a chore as we checked out 7 before settling on the Amer Hotel, a good budget choice. We had a beautiful sea view of the harbour and were right across from a mosque. Our wake-up call was at 5:30am each morning with the call to prayer. It did not matter that Bernie’s watch died! WADI RUM: The next day was spent arranging a trip to the Wadi Rum desert area. We choose Jordan Tracks as they offered a ½ day desert jeep safari and a ½ day scrambling to a rock bridge on top of a mountain...

Apr 20, 2012 - A little bit of luxury
We left Petra and headed up to the Ead Sea! It was a long trip with a few stops here and there. We got to the zfead Sea in the late afternoon. After unpacking our bags we walked around the eight swimming areas and spas down to the beach. I waded out into the water lay back and whoa, boy could I float. It was freaky! I lay back and closed my eyes and floated around bobbing up and down like a cork - I loved it! After a quick shower to was off the salt-which was intense, we headed up for a long relax in the spa. Later we had a lovel dinner and...

Well the border was a nightmare. But first. Stayed at the Hilton on the red sea! We could see Israel, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Egypt while swimming in this great Sea! What an amazing thing to do! We spent our time trying to relax, eating a lovely dinner and doing many bits of washing! Our balcony was by noticeable as we had the clothes hanging out cover the railing etc!!! The next morning after packing, we hopped on a bus to drive 20m, park, unload and then head towards the Egyptian border. No hassles we were checked, stamped and on our way...

Apr 11, 2012 - Last Day in Amman
After doing washing and organizing we took off for a few errands. Ended up at a lovely clothing store and maybe bought something! Pat and I tasted something new for lunch, Arabic sandwiches. One was almost like a stuffed donut, one had a spinach mixture, another was an Arabic samosa and then a delicious one with goat cheese. The cost for 5 sandwiches was about $2.25. As we were walking down the street a car pulled over with 2 Arabic women in - I thought they were asking Pat for directions but turns out that they were asking for money! I've...

Apr 10, 2012 - Petra
We left for Petra around 9am yesterday. First stop was Starbucks for a Jordan cup and a latte! It is amazing how many "western" places you see around here - Safeway, Curves KFC McDonalds, Little Caesars and the list goes on. The drive was interesting - a lot of brown as we drove along the road of a stone desert. You really have to wonder how people live in this land, it certainly can't be easy. We stopped at Qatraneh to see an old crusader fortress which would have been an observation point to watch for invaders. From the outside it looked...

Apr 10, 2012 - Journey to Al-Khazneh
An early start for another days adventure. We were picked up by our driver, Issam and eager to get on the road to Petra. A description of Petra in the words of the famous Dean Burgon's poem: "match me such a marvel in Eastern clime/ A rose-red city half as old as time." His words hardly do justice to the true magnificence of Petra, but I am getting ahead of myself. So we were eager to be on our way to what is referred to as the City of the Dead or also the Rose Colored City. But first I needed a Starbucks tea. Yes amazing isn't it! Pat and...

Got to the airport at 8.45pm absolutely exhausted, after only having arrived back from the airport from Jordan at 4.45am!!! Steve overslept and missed work!! Anyway, 10 planes had landed at the same time as theirs so we waited and waited and waited until...at 10.15pm we saw Dave. We were sitting having coffee so I ran outside, gave them a huge hug and then...saw Rachel!!! I cried!!! Couldn't believe my eyes. They thought I had guessed after something mum had said but I really hadn't. Best surprise ever!!! Here is a rundown of their...

Apr 8, 2012 - Arrival in Amman
Arrival in Amman After nearly 20 hours of soul numbing travel time I had arrived in Jordan. Touchdown of the plane's wheels found my nose pressed to the window, trying to get my first peek at the Jordanian country side. From the airport Amman appeared fairly flat and surprisingly green with tufts of clover blooming in the fields between the runways. It only later occurred to me that of course they would build the airport where it is relatively flat. Makes perfect sense when you think about it. Acquiring a VISA was relatively easy just a...

Apr 8, 2012 - Dead Sea
I remember reading about the Dead Sea when I was in school. I even remember coloring in the Dead Sea with blue pencil crayon. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to actually be here! Rumor is the Dead Sea mud/salt has healing properties. Five star hotels dot the shoreline. Tourists arrive for extended periods of time and local Jordanians book in for a day at a time. Most of them actually spend their time in the hotel pools with short dips Into the Sea. The path to the water was rocky and made it difficult to enter. The salt was strong...
