Aug 31, 2009 - Back to Yokohama and dinner with Brother and his wife

After a long overnight bus (approx 10 hours) we have arrived at Tokyo. The overnight bus, as usual, was not particularly pleasant but it took us from A to B. I was thinking that we’d better get used to this as there will be plenty of overnight buses in South America. The bus was fairly new and modern but the only problem is it was more designed for short Japanese so that there wasn’t enough leg room. Also, as the chairs are packed closely together, there wasn’t much space to recline the chair fully neither. If I remember correctly, the...

Aug 19, 2009 - Vicky and Joyman's wedding

We have today been to Iris’ brother - Joyman - and Vicky’s wedding. It has been a very nice experience and we wish them all happiness in their life together. The day started at about 8.30 with the alarm bell ringing. It was somewhat of an ordeal getting a shower. Some residents here seem to think that it’s perfectly acceptable to take 20 minutes long showers in the morning and block the only shower there is on the floor. I had to knock violently on the door to get them to hurry up so that we could get our shower. The person I had to chuck...

Aug 18, 2009 - Arriving at Yokohama

Today has been a very nice and relaxing day. We have not really done anything and we have hardly even left our room. We have been chasing around so much the last few days that we felt that a day of resting was in order. I have mainly played with the computer and I have also finished reading Freakonomics by Steven Levitt. It was a reasonably good book but I wouldn’t particularly recommend it to anyone either. I have left it in the hostel hoping that someone else might enjoy it. Sadly no good books to exchange it for. Iris has also been...

May 23, 2009 - Yokosuka, Kamakura and Yokohama

May 21 – Thursday. Today is checkout from the New Sanno Hotel, but before we go we’re going to wash all our clothes as I hate packing dirty clothes if I can help it. We eat breakfast in our rooms as there is a microwave around the corner to heat the Quaker Oatmeal packets. 1045 – Leave Sanno, and since we have suitcase and back packs Jim decides to grab a cab to Hiro-o for 710Y. The cab drops us off at the opposite of the street where we have been entering the subway station and it’s a good thing it did. Hiroki is standing at this exit. We...

Feb 11, 2009 - Tokyo 3 (Soccer)

On 11th Feb we went to Yokohama Nissan Stadium to watch the soccer game, Japan VS Australia World Cup Qualifying match. This is very important game for both Japan and Australia to go through Asia-Pacific Qualifying stage. At the moment Australia is the top of the ladder and Japan comes second in our group, top 2 teams will go through to World Cup final in South Africa 2010. We were very excited to wear Aussie shirts that we bought in Thailand (fake ones of course). Hiro was going for Australia this time as he is now in Japan, he’d like to...

Click for more :) Oh, and a VIDEO! :O A definite change of pace. Yokohama, though Japan's second-largest city, provides relaxation and time for reflection. I spent 2 hours alone yesterday, walking around the narrow streets of Kotobuki-ku,...

Feb 4, 2008 - Oep= Ohana English Preschool

ALOHA TO ALL: Well, it's time to hear about the reason we're here--the Preschool and it's children: 9AM-the first 3 arrive-Riku, Sara, Rin-all 2 years old. They play well together in free play. The philosophy of the school is to provide plenty of toys to encourage creativity and social skills of sharing & teamwork. I have never seen so many multi-piece toys in one place. At 10AM & 11AM more children arrive-the ones with more English go into the preschool room. We are in the day care room, but ages vary from age one to five. There is some...

Jan 24, 2008 - We're in Japan

ALOHA TO ALL: We're in Yokohama Japan for 80 days! Now, you wonder, how did this happen? Well, Japan came to us! And here's the story: The first time we went to Ala Moana Mall in June, after the return of our 13 months of travel, we met friends, Lynn & Marty in the food court. While eating Thai, we caught up with each other's travels. They had just returned from nearly 3 months in Japan volunteering as elders at OEP=Ohana English Preschool. They spoke so glowingly about the experience, we said tell us more. By the end of the meal, we wanted...

10 Days in Japan!

May 17, 2006 - Arrived at Yokohama, Japan.

Daddy's boat arrived at Yokohama Harbor, Japan on May 17, 1946 where he took a tour the next day. On May 20, 1946, he reboarded his ship and it departed for the US! Much of Yokohama was destroyed on September 1, 1923 by the Great Kantō earthquake which killed 30,771 and 47,908 injured, out of a pre-earthquake population of 434,170. Yokohama was rebuilt, only to be destroyed again by thirty-odd U.S. air raids during World War II. An estimated 7,000–8,000 people were killed in a single morning on May 29, 1945 in what is now known as the Great...
