Aug 18, 2011 - It's Better in Bizen
The main reason we came to Okayama is that it's the closest city to Imbe, home of Bizen pottery. Bizen is one of the six ancient kilns of Japan. It is characterized by the fact that it is always wood and glazes are not applied. We plan to visit all six ancient kilns although I suspect I'll have trouble knowing the difference. We started off at the gallery upstairs in Imbe Station. There was also quite a good little museum next door. Aug 17, 2011 - What's the deal with Okayama?
Lisa and I hadn't been in Okayama an hour when people began to yell at us. This would not surprise me most places in the states, but this is Japan. Everyone we encountered the first two weeks here had been extremely kind so we were not prepared for the treatment we received in Okayama. Our trip up from Kyushu went smoothly though we arrived in Okayama too early for us to check into The Hotel Koraku. They allowed us to borrow bikes so we could ride over to Korakuen Gardens.
