Nov 6, 2010 - Oysters on Miyajima

Our one and only full day in Hiroshima dawned bright and sunny. Our schedule for the coming week sees us spending two days in Nagasaki, two days in Osaka and then the final two days back in Tokyo. Including travel time on the very fast and comfortable shinkansen trains, this plan gives us a late afternoon burst in a city on arrival and then the full day and night after that. A good way to go to maximise use of the Japan Rail Pass without exhausting ourselves with too much moving around. Our day today was spent shopping and wandering in the...

Aug 18, 2008 - Miyajima

Was a cloudy start to the day here when I got up. Couldn`t believe it considering that it was my plan to go to the above Island and head up the 530M mountain there. Anyway, still went hoping for the best and I am so glad I did. It is a trully great experience getting to the top of the mountain as the view is breathtaking. I was told that there was a cablecar to the top but I managed to also find a 2.6KM path. I figured after some of the trekking I had done surely it was possible. Took me just over the hour but I must have lost a good part...

Jul 15, 2008 - Miyajima Island

May 2, 2008 - Miyajima and the Floating Tori Gate

Today we wandered around Miayajima Island, best know for it's iconic floating tori gate and sacred deer. It was an absolutely beautiful place. The deer were so "friendly" it was a little disconcerting: they come right up to you and kind of push you around trying to get you to drop stuff so they can eat it. While Josh was taking a picture of the floating tori, this one came straight for him and almost ate the tip of the camelback!!! After he got bored of Josh he came over and made me pet him; literally pushed his head under my hand like a...

Jun 18, 2007 - No drink vending machines!

There are vending machines everywhere in Japan. Today, I managed to avoid seeing one for a full three hours, as I hiked all over the island of Miyajima. Miyajima is famous for its floating Torri- a Torri gate built out on the water, so that at high tide it looks like it's floating. It marks the entrance to a floating shrine on the shore of Miyajima. I woke up early, to tour the shrine without any other people. Even though it was low tide (meaning nothing looked like it was actually floating), it was still a blessing to be at a site in...
