The small island of Miyajima is a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of Japan's biggest tourist attractions. The 'floating' orange torii (gate) of the Itsukushima-jinga is apparently one of the most photographed sites in Japan and one I should not miss. (The colour orange is thought to ward off evil and can be seen in abundance at practically every Japanese shrine and/or temple.)
