Feb 8, 2009 - Hakuba the township

Another day off skiing. The forecast wasn't good and I thought we may ski this afternoon but to busy doing the shops. The wind had come up and the upper ski lifts were closed anyway so it would have been a cold skiing day and it was Sunday is a busy day with the locals coming skiing too. The town is not really big but is full of traffic lights and at least one nice coffee shop (run by an Aussie). We went to the chemist / department store and co-op and there are some very interesting things there. We had a bit of a language and brand name...

Feb 8, 2009 - Skiing - last day

Today was our last day for skiing, and the weekend was over so the crowds had dwindled and about half the skiers were non-japanese again. Nice day with little cloud, after a little snow overnight so the first few runs were very nice, the faded as the day went on. Probably 4 degrees and no wind. Did lunch at a japanese place down from Maccas, where you buy a meal token from a machine in a smoke filled room full of Japanese people. They you take the token to a kitchen counter where a japanese lady barks japanese words at you and very quickly...

Feb 6, 2009 - Skiing Hakuba Happo One again

It snowed overnight, about 8cm of snow on top of cars and everywhere else. So we got out and went skiing. It hasn't taken long for the fresh snow to get all banked up on the popular hills. If you go where nobody else has been then it's lovely and fluffy but on the major slopes it hasn't improved the skiing much. We're still skiing in clouds and sometimes just skiing into a white oblivion. Tree, what tree???? Luckily most of the slopes are rather treeless. Our supurb organisation once again took us to a lunch meeting place called...

Feb 6, 2009 - Skiing Hakuba47 & Goyru

Another sunny day here in Japan. We went to a sushi restaurant last night and even though the train wasn't going (apparently lunchtime only) we had a good feed. Ice cream over here is very nice but milk for coffee is hard to find. Some of the gang went to see the snow monkeys and Terry and me went skiing. Went to some new places and had lunch at a restaurant which didn't stand out from the outside but we heard they had some cars there. A few Mustangs, Inter Scout 4x4, Maserati, Cobra, Porsche all stuck in what should be restaurant dining...

Feb 4, 2009 - Skiing Hakuba 47 & Goyru

We were able to ski today and see the trees, scenery and hills. Even a volcano in the distance which is erupting at the moment. It was amazing to see what was around us yesterday but we couldn't see for the fog. Just a nice day skiing, no real spills, sunshine and blue sky. For those who want to play on Google Earth 36 39.618'N 137 48.681'E. Think we're going for Sushi tonight after mexican last night. Very cross cultural!!

Feb 4, 2009 - A day off the skis

I had a lay day today. Been walking around the town and trying to organise a snow shoe tour and a skidoo ride. It may not come off yet. The snow tour guide has gone to Tokyo for a modelling work audition. The ski town of Wadano is a cute little village with small houses and accommodation places, narrow streets and on a hill. Really it's just one long street. We went up the ski jump used for the Nagano 1992 Winter Olympics which is just outside our hotel. They had a interschool championship over the last few days. The kids fly thru the air...

Feb 3, 2009 - Skiing Hakuba47

Had fun skiing today, sometimes in 10m visibility. Follow some people then they get out of site so then stop and wait for the next person. It's been slightly snowing and we've been up in the clouds most of the day. Been trying some more local food and staying away from Maccas today.

Feb 2, 2009 - Skiing at Happo One

Had a day of skiing and tried many of the slopes. The snow was good in the morning but the clouds were on the hills so visibility wasn't good. As the clouds rose the snow got slushy or icy and skiing got difficult. Still had a good day on the slopes. Cheeseburger at MacDonalds for lunch. 120 yen - somebody could let me know what they are worth in Aussie Dollars we do the comparison here. It is fun ordering but there's a lot of pointing at pictures on menus happening. Getting used to wandering the streets at night. Strangely it only seems...

Feb 1, 2009 - Tokyo airport to Hakuba

31/1 1/2 Tokyo at night at 5 degrees was a bit of a shock. Made it to the airport Hilton and all was warm & the beer prices were a high. Departed the Hilton at 8am and with Japanese driver in our limo taxi we headed up off via expressways and Tokyo. Lots of etolls around Tokyo and lots of long tunnels thru the mountains as we got further west. Had 2 breaKS at food places and got to experience the Japanese vending machine culture. Fast food is entirely different in Japan, people running around making it all happen. Saw snow at Nagano...

Japan Ski Trip 2009

Jan 9, 2009 - Hakuba

Just after the New Year’s party hustle finished, our friends from Port Douglas Heidi and Jorg visited us here in Japan on the way back from Belgium. It was always great to have someone we know back home who made an effort to come and visit us. Their main purpose here in Japan was skiing, so we headed northeast to Hakuba, one of huge ski resort surrounded by snow-covered beautiful mountains. It took us about 5hours to drive there. It was very first time for Lexi to try skiing, and it was quite hard. Hakuba once held a Winter Olympics, so...
