Oct 3, 2019 - Day 13 Dolomites

Thunder and lightening during the night and the rain bickered down. Our apartment is right next to a canal and I've thought it's been raining a number of times over the last few days however it was just the water lapping in the buildings or a boat going past. This time it was rain for real. Oh dear, not what we really wanted. I checked the weather and even though the temperature is only forecast to be 9C, it's meant to be sunny. Walking to the meeting place was a bit of a challenge. The ponchos we bought in Monterosso got another workout...

Oct 2, 2019 - Day 12 Murano, gondolier ride and St Marks Square

Because we bought 24 hour vaporetto tickets, we decided to visit Murano for the glass making. No mad rush to get out the door so had a leisurely breakfast before heading out. We walked to Ca D'Oro and caught the reverse No 1 ferry to the train station and then changed to the No 3 for Murano. We went past the Island of the Dead on the way and the kids were interested in hearing about it. When we arrived at Murano, there was a tout directing us over the bridge to see the glass making and as we were keen to see it, we walked in that direction....

Oct 1, 2019 - Day 11 Firenze to Venezia

Off to Venezia today. We have to be out of the apartment by 10:00 and the train leaves at 11:30 so we took it easy getting packed up. Joe couldn't find anything as I'd repacked his case the day by sorting them into like items and putting them into his individual travel packs. It was far too organised for him. He prefers his 'throw everything into the case' method. Georgia was rushing madly the closer it came to time to leave. Getting organised in the morning is not her strong suit and we spend a bit of time each day waiting. Eventually it...

Sep 19, 2019 - Arrivederci Italy, Hello England

We bid a fond farewell to Italy this morning. We had absolutely NO problems at all which, considering we got lost a LOT in Venice, was atypical. We reached the water bus right on time, it delivered us at the water terminal right as the water bus to the airport arrived, and we made it to the airport without a hitch! The airport was unique because it listed water arrivals as well as land. It was spotless, well-designed and never seemed hurried. If I rated the Venice Airport it would be near or at the top of the list. Not only was the Airport...

Sep 18, 2019 - Murano & Burano

We woke to an overcast and cooler day. This was our day to head to the islands of Murano & Burano. We took the vaporetto from San Toma to the San Marco/Giardetti stop to check out our plan of attack for leaving tomorrow. To our amazement, the stop for the Ilalguana vaporetto to the airport was on the other side of the same dock. That should be easy & NO steps! On we went to Murano, the island of blown glass. That is exactly what it is. Every shop, and there are many, was filled with blown glass. Some of the high end shops were like museums....

Sep 17, 2019 - Discovering Venice

2019-09-17 OUR FIRST DAY IN VENICE This morning we got a good look at our apartment and were thrilled. We had not one, but two patios that were for our use only. The interior was recently renovated, and sported rows of LED's for lighting in the bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen/dining area was not upgraded, and we lived with a single bulb in the ceiling for some time until we found a short LED strip over the microwave. Still, it was a delightful place to live, and even sported another bedroom (sleeping room for 7). Hey, that means any of...

Jun 6, 2019 - Day 23 - Treviso into Austria

Day 23 - Thursday 6 June 19 - Treviso We returned to our hole in the wall breakfast spot of yesterday at 0830 hrs for a sandwich, pastries and coffee before recovering the car from the nearby free car park. The 50 km drive to Padua/ Padova was via Noale to avoid the main freeway. Entry to the city provided no problems and a large car park in the centre was easily found; 1 km from our objective the Basilica di San’t Antonio. We set off for the Basilica to be immediately waylaid by the Abbey of Santa Giustina ( Justina). As a young Christian...

Jun 5, 2019 - Day 22 - Treviso

Day 22 - Wednesday 5 June - Treviso We were dressed and ready to farewell A&J as they headed for Triest at 0930 hrs. Today was planned as a rest day, however, we continued to walk areas of the town centre we had not visited yesterday. As a result, we believe we have found a nice well hidden restaurant for dinner tonight. A further purpose of the morning walk was to purchase a European area pre paid phone card; A&J’s tale of a blown car tyre in a remote locality and many phone calls for assistance a sobering experience. At what I think is a...

Jun 4, 2019 - Day 21 - Treviso

Day 21 - Tuesday 4 June 19 - Treviso A&J are only planning to be in Treviso for two days so it was agreed they would decide the days itinerary. The first objective was to walk the western wall to the Tuesday market . We were immediately acquainted with the many waterways that divide the old town and individual properties with water moving quite quickly. We could see why there is reference to the town having similarities with Venice. The stalls were primarily fashion, flower and cheeses. A morning tea break was taken at a town entry at the...

Jun 3, 2019 - Day 20 - Treviso

Day 20 - Monday 3 June 19 - Treviso Our trip to date through Italy has been based on a mother’s love/admiration for her daughter’s enthusiasm and good judgement; she visited in Jul last year and mother has wanted to replicate her experiences. Today we return to our itinerary by visiting Treviso 50km SE of Bassano DG. Our planned first point of call was Villa Maser ( Villa Barbaro) 22km E, however, a poor memory and the failure to check opening times left us looking at the Villa from the front gate. While the building is large and has an...

May 21, 2019 - Two days in Venice, Italy

Day 24 Monday 20th May 2019 Venice, Italy 𯇮𯇹 We were up around 6:30am as we had to be out of our cabin by 7am, so down to breakfast with all of our hand luggage. We arrived in Venice about 7:45am and were ready to disembark but had to wait our turn until about 9:45am. Walked off the ship and went through immigration then picked up our luggage in the arrivals hall, and walked to the people mover in light rain (about 1 km away). We were dropped just near the main railway station and then walked to our hotel about 300 metres away. After we...

May 12, 2019 - Venezia

Our room overlooked the Grand Canal, and it was such a thrill being woken early by the many water crafts - delivery craft and others going to work. Then the chimes from the Church told us it was time to get up! It is pouring rain and very cold! So armed with a Hotel shower cap over camera lens and wet weather gear, we braved the elements. Fortunately not many people out and about yet (but by midday, the crowds were so thick with umbrellas everywhere.) We entered the front area of the Ferry, and wondered why there were only a few people...
