Jun 6, 2019 - Day 23 - Treviso into Austria

Day 23 - Thursday 6 June 19 - Treviso We returned to our hole in the wall breakfast spot of yesterday at 0830 hrs for a sandwich, pastries and coffee before recovering the car from the nearby free car park. The 50 km drive to Padua/ Padova was via Noale to avoid the main freeway. Entry to the city provided no problems and a large car park in the centre was easily found; 1 km from our objective the Basilica di San’t Antonio. We set off for the Basilica to be immediately waylaid by the Abbey of Santa Giustina ( Justina). As a young Christian...

Jun 5, 2019 - Day 22 - Treviso

Day 22 - Wednesday 5 June - Treviso We were dressed and ready to farewell A&J as they headed for Triest at 0930 hrs. Today was planned as a rest day, however, we continued to walk areas of the town centre we had not visited yesterday. As a result, we believe we have found a nice well hidden restaurant for dinner tonight. A further purpose of the morning walk was to purchase a European area pre paid phone card; A&J’s tale of a blown car tyre in a remote locality and many phone calls for assistance a sobering experience. At what I think is a...

Jun 4, 2019 - Day 21 - Treviso

Day 21 - Tuesday 4 June 19 - Treviso A&J are only planning to be in Treviso for two days so it was agreed they would decide the days itinerary. The first objective was to walk the western wall to the Tuesday market . We were immediately acquainted with the many waterways that divide the old town and individual properties with water moving quite quickly. We could see why there is reference to the town having similarities with Venice. The stalls were primarily fashion, flower and cheeses. A morning tea break was taken at a town entry at the...

Jun 3, 2019 - Day 20 - Treviso

Day 20 - Monday 3 June 19 - Treviso Our trip to date through Italy has been based on a mother’s love/admiration for her daughter’s enthusiasm and good judgement; she visited in Jul last year and mother has wanted to replicate her experiences. Today we return to our itinerary by visiting Treviso 50km SE of Bassano DG. Our planned first point of call was Villa Maser ( Villa Barbaro) 22km E, however, a poor memory and the failure to check opening times left us looking at the Villa from the front gate. While the building is large and has an...

May 21, 2019 - Two days in Venice, Italy

Day 24 Monday 20th May 2019 Venice, Italy 𯇮𯇹 We were up around 6:30am as we had to be out of our cabin by 7am, so down to breakfast with all of our hand luggage. We arrived in Venice about 7:45am and were ready to disembark but had to wait our turn until about 9:45am. Walked off the ship and went through immigration then picked up our luggage in the arrivals hall, and walked to the people mover in light rain (about 1 km away). We were dropped just near the main railway station and then walked to our hotel about 300 metres away. After we...

May 12, 2019 - Venezia

Our room overlooked the Grand Canal, and it was such a thrill being woken early by the many water crafts - delivery craft and others going to work. Then the chimes from the Church told us it was time to get up! It is pouring rain and very cold! So armed with a Hotel shower cap over camera lens and wet weather gear, we braved the elements. Fortunately not many people out and about yet (but by midday, the crowds were so thick with umbrellas everywhere.) We entered the front area of the Ferry, and wondered why there were only a few people...

70 Canals 2019

May 11, 2019 - Today’s THE day - off to Venice!

After showering again in the “broom” closet, went down for breakfast. The waitresses wear traditional black dresses with white lace collars and stiffened cuffs - as of old! Then, we pushed our suitcases the 600 metres from our Hotel to the Railway Station “Termini,” over pothole pavements, bouncing the gutters, cross roads with peak hour traffic - no! don’t look that way - you are in Europe, then around crowds that don’t move aside for “oldies”. Successfully completed! So exciting in ItaloTreno fast Train - we are in row one, having...

Oct 30, 2018 - The Islands of Burano and Torcello

Well, I guess we really did survive the Venice Flood of 2018!! It was described in the New York Times and other newspapers. We were kept warm and safe by our tour guide. We walked around St Mark's Square as you saw yesterday; had our lunch of pizza in the rising water and were back in our hotel by 1pm. High tide was about 2pm. Our hotel had been newly renovated against flooding; so like I said we were warm and safe!! Today, the sun came out and the waters were calmer so we set out on our water taxi to two nearby islands. The Island of...

Oct 29, 2018 - Venice, Italy

Venice is the capitol of northern Italy's Veneto region. It is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals - including the Grand Canal thoroughfare - lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The islands are linked by over 400 bridges. The Central square is Piazza San Marco or Saint Mark's Square. It contains Saint Mark's Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics. The other important structure is the Campanile bell tower that has been there as long as the Basilica. This square...

Sep 27, 2018 - Day 14 - Day trip to the Dolomites

Chiara recommended that we visit the Dolomites if we had lime while we're away. Today's the day. We had to be up reasonably early so we could walk to meet our driver at Piazzale Roma at 8:30. Surprise, surprise, Riley had left over pasta for breakfast before we got under way. Sarah once again took the tour leader role and made sure we arrived at the meeting point with plenty of time. It's another sunny day however we all dressed in layers as we were told it would be cool up in the mountains. We met our fellow travellers, 2 Australians and...

Sep 26, 2018 - Day 13 - Venice and walking tour

We have a walking organised for today however it doesn't start until 4:30 so we decided to have a lazy morning. I popped to the supermarket to get the makings for pasta sauce to have when we return from the tour. We still had half the packet of pasta we bought on the farm so didn't need to buy pasta. Both kids decided mushrooms for breakfast might be nice so I bought extras...some for pasta, some for breakfast. I cooked the pasta sauce so we could dish up dinner fairly quickly when we returned from the tour. Brekkie over, we sent off to...

Sep 25, 2018 - Day 12 - Florence to Venice

Time to pack up for the next leg of our journey. The train to Venice didn't leave until 11:30 and we had until 10:00am to vacate our accommodation so I let the kids sleep late and then we breakfasted and finished packing up before leaving at 10. We were sad to say goodbye to our little apartment. It was very cosy and suited us well. We stopped at the local market in the square not far from the apartment and Riley and I bought a couple of souvenirs from a local craftsman. We were both happy with our purchases. We made sure our journey took...
