Sep 17, 2018 - They Put A Farm Here !???

After our ferry ride we are back on our not so old 18 seater buses to transport us to a farm for dinner. It would have been nice to return to the hotel then out to dinner but alas no... So we are all looking like bedraggled sheep dragging ourselves on to the buses with a quiet confidence that we arrive at a farm in good time. Our shepherd, Antonio is not on our bus and we dont have our headsets on. All of a sudden we pull up to a factory that does wood turning. The driver reverses into the carpark jumps out of his seat and tells us to get...

Sep 17, 2018 - Over On Capri

Today we catch a ferry to Isle of Capri. But first we must shop and wander the small alley ways of Sorrento. We purchase a few items....for ourselves lol - then make our back to our meeting point for the next part of our adventure. We find our shepherd and he leads us to our next mode of transport. Not so old 18 seater buses this time. These will take us to the ferry for our voyage across to the Isle of Capri. Debra and I are not doing any extra tours on Capri such as visiting the various grotto's - blue - green - white. We opt to have lunch...

Sep 15, 2018 - Erice

We made it out of Palermo quite easily. We were able to walk for 25 minutes on the same street which was blocked off so down the middle of the street we went. We stopped at a Doric temple in Segesta and then could not enter Erice as it was on the top of a hill and there was a car race with many different classes so the only way in was by cable car. Road closed for both Saturday and Sunday. Erice is a nice town with many 15th,16th and 17th century buildings. We watched several cars finish the race on Saturday. Not a poor man's hobby.

Sep 14, 2018 - Palermo, Sicily

After leaving the lovely city of Alghero, we traveled to Oristano via Bosa. We stayed at a period hotel. We were some of the fortunate ones where everything in our hotel room worked. On Wednesday, we stopped at the Roman ruins of Tharros. Yesterday we toured an archeology museum and then headed to the airport for a flight to Rome and then another to Palermo. Our first flight was late and then we missed the second one. There was room on a later flight so we arrived at our hotel about 10 pm. Today we toured the city with stops at several...

Jun 10, 2018 - heading for the Adriatic

Wednesday 30 May After completing some provisioning and chores, we left Palermo and headed for Cefalu. Had to motor as there was little wind. The coast line, if you can see it through the humidity is really quite stunning – mountains and greenery. Coming in towards Cefalu you see the old medieval town with it’s imposing cathedral. The little cove in which we anchored off from the marina is truly stunning with its rocks (which the remains of a fortress) and surrounds. Even though there are holiday resorts around the cove it was still...

Jun 3, 2018 - continuing on.....

Wednesday 23 May Left mid morning and headed for Trapani where we hope to get some good provisioning in and access to chandlers and most importantly have the outboard looked at. Took up a morning near the boat services and the proceeded to investigate what is available. There was a Mercury service centre which we got directed to. We had problems finding it at first but then a kind mechanic drove us to the place, which we would never have found on our own. Gen described the problem (and in the process learned a few more technical terms in...

May 18, 2018 - Wine (and almond) tasting in Avola

Nero d'Avola has earned a special place in our hearts. On our transatlantic Costa cruise, we tried to order a bottle of Spanish wine on our first night and use a special program for a discount. Our waiter came back and said that we couldn't use the discount yet (we needed to sign up at the customer service desk), but that he could offer us the house wine instead. Nero d'Avola. We thought we'd give the Sicilian wine a try, and sure enough, we loved it. The next day, Fran saw a "Brindisi package" offered on the ship's deck, two bottles of the...

May 15, 2018 - Old sights and old friends in Siracusa

Having grown up in Siracuse, New York, I was quite excited to see its namesake, Siracusa, Sicily. While researching places to see in Sicily, I discovered that Siracusa was reported to have been the most beautiful city of the ancient Greek world with lots to see, and we certainly did our best to cover all the highlights in the short time we had. We essentially had one day to check out the ancient island city of Ortygia (where we had found an airbnb apartment), a second day to see the archeological area located in the new part of town, and a...

May 12, 2018 - Palermo

Saturday 12th May: Back to Palermo. Today we had the long trip back to Palermo so another early start. However, as we drove inland we detoured south past Piazza Armerina to visit the famous Roman Villa del Casale, another UNESCO site. This very large villa was completely covered by a landslide and lay hidden for 700 years before being rediscovered in 19th century. The mosaics are extraordinarily vivid and deal with many subjects from mythological scenes to portrayals of daily life. Near Piazza Armerina, we stopped for lunch at a lovely...

May 12, 2018 - Ferry to Palermo! Welcome to Sicily!

Time to board the boat in Tunis to Palermo! This time, due to scheduling issues, we had booked through Direct Ferry with Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV). We decided to take a taxi out to the port instead of the handy train (the very same one that links Tunis with Carthage and the picturesque Sidi Bou Said), spending basically our last Tunisian dinars on the ride. As we waited in line to check in, I sensed we were in trouble when I didn't see our ferry listed on the electronic board. Sure enough, it was delayed until the next morning. All the...

May 11, 2018 - Siracusa

Friday 11th May: Today was an optional tour to Siracusa which we decided not to miss. So we were on the bus again by 8am. On reaching Siracusa the first stop was the Neapolis Archeological Park where we met our guid, Elisabet. She took us through the park and showed many remains from ancient Greek rule. The Greek Theatre was similar to that in Taormina, although bigger seating 15000, in that it was carved out of the rocky hillside. It is still used today for Greek tragedies and comedies. Further along the path was the remains of the...

May 10, 2018 - Taormina

Thursday 10th May: On top of Mt Etna. Once again Flavia had us up very early for the drive up Etna as far as 2000m. Along the way she explained the history of the volcano and pointed out the various lava flows. We arrived at the Silvestri Craters which formed with the eruptions of 2001. It was an eerie and awe-inspiring experience to walk around and down into these craters and to see how close the flows came to buildings there. It was cold and bleak on the mountain adding to the atmosphere and Flavia’s early start was brilliant as not only...
