May 7, 2012 - Rental car... Mount Etna, and the drive!!! OMG!!!

I got early and took a long walk to city centro at about 7:30! Had espresso at a little "bar" on the way..and put a few coins in the slots!!! Wowee! Won $7.00! Scoped out the city when ther is no one around, sono persa ( lost)!! But again, found my way without a hitch! Uphill, of course! Molly and I trekked uphill, to the Villa Madonna, a beautiful little church ( no camera) where we met an old man, Giuseppe , putting flowers on the door of the church! He said that he had married there over. 40 years ago...(we assumed his wife had...

Mar 27, 2012 - Cefalu

Just spent 2 days in the little fishing village of Cefalu. It's a lovely little town at the base of a large rock called "La Rocca", which is capped with the ruins of an old fortress. Much like other places along the Mediterranean, Sicily has been conquered by a succession of various groups - Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans and Spanish. All of whom have left their mark on the island and which makes for an interesting mix of architecture, food and people. So far the tour is going well. It's a good group of older...

May 31, 2011 - Monreale & Cefalu

Entry #14 May 31 and June 1, 2011 Tuesday morning we were up early on our way to Cefalù where we would stay for 2 days. The bus left at 8AM and we all checked to see if our "buddy" was aboard. The buddy system works like this. Besides the person you are traveling with (Anne in Tom's case) you choose another person on the tour who becomes your buddy. When a buddy check is made, you make sure that your buddy is there before the bus leaves or a walk begins. With a 54 passenger bus (a bit of overkill for a tour of 24 people) this is essential...

Apr 24, 2011 - Cefalu - enroute to Piazza Armenia

Wonderful seaside town. We were stuck at the toll booth for 50 minutes coming into town because there was only one toll booth open. It was Easter and tolls seemed to be free yet everyone put there ticket in and waited and waited taking approx 1 minute per car. We know because we were timing it. It was worth the trip to this medieval town

Aug 29, 2006 - Sicily

Days 1-3, Sicily: From Sorrento we took an overnight train to the island of Sicily. We were a little anxious to see what our accommodations would look like upon arrival, as the reservation process had turned out to be a bit of a circus. We had picked the beach town of Cefalu (on the northern coast - an hour or so east of Palermo) to serve as our home base on the island, and had been unsuccessful in securing a place to sleep after calling six or seven hotels. Ultimately, the front desk of a random hotel recommended that we call a popular...

Apr 9, 2006 - Che-Fa-loo--Sicily

Well it's really spelled Cefalu, but I thought I'd help everyone out with some pronunciation. We decided when the sun came out it was time for a beach trip for some R&R because we have all been working soooo hard here in Rome! Four other girls and I packed up our backpacks full of warm weather clothes, flip flops, and sun oil and headed to Sicily. The train ride there is 11 hours, so we did the overnight thing again. You always run into funny people on the trains. I think we were all wondering what this town was going to be like since none...

Jun 26, 2005 - Sicily - Cefalu

Sicilia was going to be a well earned rest after what seemed like a few weeks of hectic sightseeing! 'The One from Rock Town and the The from The Bluff' had taken in a lot since hitting the Cultural country of the World! We settled into a few very relaxing days on the north coast of Sicily, in the very quaint little town of Cefalu. The water was deliciously warm, the sun extremely hot and the company the same as it had been when we left the Mud Island.....
