Before leaving Rome today we headed to the area of Laterano to visit San Giovanni Cathedral or St John's which is considered the Church of Rome, and is the Church of which the Pope is the Archbishop. It was founded by Emperor Constantine in the early 4th century and was rebuilt several times, but has retained its original basilica form. The adjoining Lateran Palace was the official papal residence until 1309 when the papacy was moved to Avignon in France.
