Sep 24, 2014 - Siena

Siena: Drove into Siena from Ulignano and parked just outside the city centre. Worked out the parking metre (4.50 Eur) for 4 hours and headed into the walled city (to find a car charger for the sat nav – which we found in a photo shop close by, 15 Eur) and then spent hours just walking around the streets – I bought a new bag (to fit my wallet) lots of leather shops as you would expect and beautiful churches – even Peter was impressed. We sat in the Piazza – famous for the annual horse race within its centre and had a beer before heading...

Sep 24, 2014 - Lucca - Monterosso cinque terre

Lucca - Monterosso – cinque terre Arrived in Lucca for a stopover on our way to Monterosso - We loved Lucca – a walled city still intact. Parked outside the station (free – amazing) and walked into the old part of the city to have lunch at an outside café. Spent the next few hours wandering around the old city - paid 4.50 Eur each to see the palace gardins (not as big as Corbett gardens - and about as impressive!) Pete bought a large cup in a small non-tourist shop as we headed back to get back into our car and drive to the cinque terre - a...

Sep 19, 2014 - San Gimignano

Spent the afternoon in Gimignano (Barb's & Deb recommendation) A beautiful little medieval town famous for its towers of which 14 remain (from 72 originally)about 7 kilometres from Ulignano that we could see as we drove towards it. We parked in one of the allotted parking areas (8 Eur) (parking in Italy is difficult as the streets of these small towns weren't exactly built for cars). Headed up many stairs into the town itself and looked for the Trattoria Chiribiri which had been recommended to us by Elio. It was small and the food was...

Sep 18, 2014 - Italy

We arrived in Rome (Leonardo da Vinci di Fiumicino) 7am on Sunday morning after a long but not so tiring flight. Picked up car (Peugeot) and headed up the coast to Ulignano - our first stop. Driving in Italy not as scary as I thought - no one seems to get upset they just wait or go around you! Amazing - no road rage it seems. Stopped in Bolsena for a walk and picked up some fruit (3.5 Eur) Beautiful lakeside town - lot's of bike riders and families out enjoying sunshine and lunch. Then onto Ulignano to find Hotel Vecchio Asilo - using...
