Thursday 17th May: The pace of this tour is very pleasant and again Angelo picked us up at 9.30am. We drove north of Bari to the little fishing port of Trani which was one of the most important medieval Italian ports and rivalled Bari for power. The natural harbour is very picturesque and is lined with restaurants and wine bars very popular with the holiday makers. The 11th century Duomo of San Nicola Pellegrino is right on the seafront and is actually three churches stacked on top of each other like an inverted wedding cake. It was built...

Sep 20, 2011 - Di Baroqueing Italy

The churches we have visited in Caserta and Trani have had some serious di baroquing. The glitz has been removed in the 19th and early 20th centuries to bring them back to their original condition, or as near as possible. It has certainly been a big change from what we saw in other countries. In Trani, on the east coast we originally climbed the 250 stairs up the bell tower of the cathedral, which had its baroque cover removed in 1857.
