Sep 15, 2018 - Stresa - Lake Maggiore

After leaving Verona, we continued to the lakes area of Italy which includes Lake Como, which seems to be the most famous because George Clooney has a house there, and Lake Maggiore, where we were going. As we got off the toll road, our first views of Lake Maggiore were beautiful. Our big bus was on a small road that paralleled the lake’s shoreline and the views got better and better as we approached our hotel. The Alps were all around the lake. Truly beautiful. Then there we were at The Regina Palace Hotel, which was the most elegant of...

This week we moved from Vaison la Romaine to another wonderful Provencale village of Lourmarin, the home of recently deceased author Peter Mayles (A Year In Provence). We again used the local bus service, enabling us to reach out of the way peaks. Lourmarin is a delightful village with the traditional market completely taking over the town on a Friday. Provencale markets are a moveable feast of sights, sounds and smells as vendors travel around the villages setting up on different days of the week. On more than one occasion we have...

Sep 15, 2017 - Stresa to Lesa & Belgrate- villas, vineyards and cheese

We have good long hike today south above and along lake Maggiore. Suns out for an early start- pretty pretty pretty place! The terraced gardens and statues around the little island Isola Bella just offshore are lit up in the sun like a big floating wedding cake. We climb up and go past a few villages, always adorned with little shrines and alters, terraced vineyards, and huge hillside villas from the 18th and 19th century where Italian nobility once would hang out (? now populated by the nouveau rich & famous.) Today I am arguing with my...

Sept.14 Happy to get out of the city and out to the Lagos today. Arrive in the little city of Stresa on Lago Maggiore in a fine mist rain -a first for us , we've had so much luck on 4 years of walking holidays in Europe, barely a cloud. The elderly hotel proprietor is so sweet apologetic, first we had to wait 20 minutes for our our room, then the rain- he pats my arm and brings me cappuccino, poor señora! We laugh and try to explain that we live in a rain forest on a mountain so will not perish in this mist. On go the rain jackets and we...

May 3, 2017 - Switzerland

Left Milan this morning with the prospect of more rain. Not what we were hoping for our scenic side trip to Switzerland on the Maggiore Express. Luckily weather held out until we were nearly finished for the day. While tripping along the Alps just before the Swiss border we came upon a station at the small village of Re. If you’re looking for something different for your next holiday you can come to Re and hire a bike at the train 𯚂 station and spend a few hours of extreme cycling. We spent the arvo at Locarno and Ascona where we...

May 30, 2016 - Stresa

It’s Monday, and our last day in Italy, well I should say free day. We’ve been in Stresa since Friday, I wrote about our trip to the botanical gardens which were so interesting and beautiful. We had plans yesterday to take the Ferry to the islands. As we went to bed on Saturday night there was quite a lightning show. Thunder a bit, but then the rains came down. We got up Sunday and it was raining, and then it rained really hard. Now we’re from Las Vegas, it pours there, for maybe 15, 20 minutes, then it stops. Sometimes a little longer,...

Italy revisited 2016

Jun 5, 2014 - Stresa Day 2

Kaye and I slept well last night while Jan listened to an orchestration of wind instruments, well into the early hours. Our primary objective for the day is for Jan to visit Isola Bella. We took the first ferry from in front of our hotel at 0930hrs. It is the lovely sunny day that we were planning on and the short boat trip is pleasantly comfortable. We first visit the summer Grand palace of the Borromeo family. Access to the principal rooms is good and the decorations and displays extensive. There are several very unique rooms, including...

Jun 4, 2014 - Stresa, Italy

Despite our early night, everyone had a good nights sleep. The haze had cleared sufficiently to see the mountains across the valley bathed in the rising sun - not perfect viewing but better than yesterday. More photo's!! Following breakfast, we set off on our much anticipated 230km drive through the Swiss alps and along the eastern edge of Lake Maggiore; we had driven the western edge in 2011. GeePS advised of a travel time of 3 hrs 14 mins. The initial 110 km was done in quick time as the motorway was double lane for most of the way. It...

May 11, 2014 - Stresa

Train from Milan to Stresa was fast intercity taking only 50 minutes. Stresa seems a world away from the bustling Milan, a breathtakingly picturesque town on the western shores of Lake Maggiore.Surrounded by bush clad hills and mountains, the lake shore is dotted with numerous towns and villages, and the lake supports a busy fleet of water craft ferrying tourists to the nearby Isola Bella,Isola Madre and Isola Superiore. Easy to just sit on the lake sure and watch the activity and take in the beautiful scenery. Took the cable car up to...

We leave La Spezia by early morning train heading to Milian where we store our luggage for the day while we explore the city. On the way to the metro station I missed a step and took a hard fall ending up on the flat on the sidewalk, in the fall I some how cut my right hand, the train station police came and took my to the medical unit at the train station where they said I needed to go the hospital and called a ambulance to take me there, Judith the tour leader went with me as I speak no Italian, ending up in the emergency room where I got...

Sep 19, 2011 - Lake Como/Lake Maggiore and Stresa Italy

We left Milan for an hour or so drive to some of the most beautiful scenery that we have ever experienced—The Lake Como and Lake Maggiore Ares of Northern Italy. The deep blue waters set against the cliffs that seem to shoot straight up from the shore combined with the distant backdrop of the snow covered Alps is impossible to describe in words. You would simply have to see it to understand! I have heard heaven described many ways over the years, but I am now sure it must look a lot like Lake Como area! We took a water taxi across the lake...

Aug 15, 2008 - Stresa - Lake Maggiore

I arrived in Thursday afternoon, after a long but uneventful journey, consisting of 2 planes, a bus and train. I was pretty tired when I got here, but after a shower and nap, I was feeling pretty good. The jetlag doesn’t seem to be hitting me as hard this trip. I was awoken my first night to thunder, lightening, wind and pouring rain. I laid in bed for several hours watching the lightening light up my room and listening to the sound of the thunder before falling asleep to the sound of the rain hitting my window. The next morning skies were...
