Jun 14, 2015 - Picnic on Monte Lungo

June 14: Well the day starts in a weird way when I go to remove some laundry from a hanger in my window and my finger is grabbed and pinched or bit by a 3 inch long bright green critter sitting on it- hard to know exactly what not surprisingly,as the laundry, the hanger and the wildlife flew out of my hand onto the floor, but it seemed to be a little lizard that quickly scuttled away. What next! A bit creepy, but no harm done really, just another tale to tell.. Today we think we're really lucky. Luca drives us up out of the valley, telling...

Jun 13, 2015 - Men in briefs in the Forca delle Porelle

June 13: Oh my gosh... Umbria! Any fears we may have had about leaving the best food and beauty of the landscape behind in Tuscany.. quickly dispelled. The dinner in Spoleto last night, at an outdoor table at Piazza Della Liberta where all the locals gathered, was best yet, I finally had the risotto con tortufo (truffle) appearing on every menu, and Doug experienced nirvana with his Montefalco Umbrian Rossa wine. Not to mention some fine entertainment for the entire piazza - a middle aged mama suddenly appeared in the piazza and leaned over...

Walks in Italy

Jun 12, 2015 - It's like a scene from Italian cinema...

June 12: We are firmly landed in the hills of Umbria, right in the middle of the boot of Italy. Navigation of 2 stops on Trena Italia to Spoleto is not too tricky , we really like train travel, but we certainly are still newbies when it comes to figuring out things like what platform we're on without looking like a deer in the headlights. Mountain trails and reptiles aside, the biggest peril by far we've encountered has been the taxi ride from train station to hotel in Spoleto. As we hurtle through the narrow alleys at ( no exaggeration )...

Jun 16, 2012 - We head to the countryside

We catch the subway to the Termini – and locate the Europcar office. Here we pick up our Lancia, feed our destinations into the GPS and head out into the Rome traffic. I consider that we are quite lucky. There are some demonstrations and the traffic is extremely slow. Takes us almost 20 minutes to do a block around the train terminus!. We gradually make our way into the suburbs and it is not long before we are out in the country. We are choosing the back roads and are glad for the lack of traffic and other tourists. A scenic day as we...

Sep 19, 2011 - Happy Birthday to Me!

I get up at the crack of dawn to get Sonya to the train station by 6:30 (Yes, you read that right.  I was up in the dark!)  Debra, bless her heart, got up to ride with me IN THE DARK!  I think Sonya made it on time.  Debra and I went back to the house and back to sleep. Everyone got up a bit late.  I snuck out onto the loggia to write.  Apparently, Wanda had been awake and was waiting for someone to come downstairs.  She immediately started talking to me.  I believe I actually growled at her.  Wanda and I never roomed together in college so...

Aimee's Italy 2011

Sep 11, 2011 - Sandy, Jack & Sonya

Up.  Not quite a early as Sandy would have liked.  Apparently she has insomnia and stayed up a good portion of the night so knows now exactly what we will be doing this week. Jack got up a bit later. She made a lovely breakfast of coffee and cheese toast.   We were allowed to sit around a bit and then off to Spoleto.  They followed me into the city.  I went to where Jackie found the great parking place last time.  Unfortunately, that area was blocked off because of the flea market.  As we were looking for a place, Sandy just decided to park...

Aimee's Italy 2011

Aug 31, 2011 - Spoleto

No clock in room and I didn't have a cell phone yet.  I asked for a wakeup call at 8 so I could get out and have breakfast downstairs.  I got my wakeup call at 9.  No breakfast for me.  OK I probably needed the sleep more than the breakfast.  Fortunately had a Lara Bar in my bag.  Tried to get stamps.  Post office across the street.  Just didn't have the energy to figure it out.  I'll try later.  Off to the train station, this time in a reasonably priced cab.  The main train station is busy.  I have no confidence in getting the train thing...

Jun 3, 2006 - Spoleto and the Italian apetite

Another really cold day, we can't believe how cold it has gotten. We drove into Spoleto, which is the largest town near here, to have a walk around and see the wine and cheese festival that is on. Unfortunately nothing like the Devonport one but we had a good look around the old streets and had a look in the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral which is very beautiful. As we walked inside we overheard an English speaking man explaining about a painting of Jesus on a cross. It was painted in 1187. The ceilings in the cathedral are so ornate and the...
