Jul 19, 2018 - Sestri Levante

19 July 2018 Our last day in Italy and we all opted for a quiet restful day. Don & Pam are paying the penalty in the legs from yesterday's climbing effort. Not so Trudie, she is fine, but just a little tired. Had a later breakfast, wrote some postcards and then went for a walk to post the cards, visit the chemist and also sort out some money. Marcel & Trudie did their own thing and then we met in the cool of the hotel sitting room for a game of cards. We went for another walk downtown for a bite to eat, and then decided to have a rest for a...

Jul 18, 2018 - Sestri Levante

18 July 2018 This was the day that three of us became Italian mountain goats! Set off with a sort of plan, which got amended at our first stop. Caught the train to Manarola and checked with a very helpful lady at the coffee shop about walking to Corniglia. She very quickly told us "no" to what we were planning to do. Suggested we catch the bus to Volastra where we could join the track to walk to Corniglia. Sounded good, so off we go. A very steep bus ride UP to Volastra, directions from the bus driver, and all good to get on our way. A...

Jul 17, 2018 - Sestri Levante

17 July 2018 Not the best night's sleep we have enjoyed. Don was not too bad with his cough, but Pam's throat decided it would keep her awake. Gave up at some stage during the night and found Don's pills, which relieved the soreness for a while. Met Marcel and Trudie for breakfast and decided we would still head off for Monterosso on the 9.50am train. Dosed up on Don's pills for a second time, the throat came good and we enjoyed a lovely day out. Decided not to tackle any big walks between towns today, and we all enjoyed mooching around...

Jul 16, 2018 - Sestri Levante

16 July 2018 All slept well and met for breakfast at 7.30am. This is included in our accommodation, and a very nice set up, which we all enjoyed. Met in the lobby a little later and discussed what we might do for the day. The weather was dull and we were told to expect a few showers. Decided to just stay around Sestri Levante, so set off for a walk along the sea front. Plenty heading to the beach, which is so different to home. They are quite happy to sit or lay on the rocky beach. They probably don't like our sandy beaches either. Enjoyed...

Jul 15, 2018 - Saas Fee to Sestri Levante

15 July 2018 Up early, light breakfast and as we were ready early, Marcel suggested we get the earlier bus from Saas Fee to Brig, and that would eliminate one bus/train change with luggage. Bus to Brig was a good trip, but then we found the train to Italy was running late!! Their excuse was a medical emergency, but as this is a regular thing, we were a bit doubtful. Eventually left Brig 30 minutes late, which meant we missed our next connection in Milano by five minutes. Conflicting reports from the ticket inspector on train and station...

Jun 16, 2017 - Sestri Levante, Santa Margherita Ligure & Portofino

Arrived in Sestri Levante by train. My host Massi met me at Piazza Republica and we walked the short distance to the house. Very nice room with a little yard where he serves breakfast of focaccia, coffee, watermelon and juice in the morning. So far no other guest but me in this two bedroom apartment in a residential complex. I made dinner last night of fresh spaghetti, pesto, baguette, and a some vino of course. What I like about Sestri is that although it is on the Italian riviera, it is not very touristy. A small town and very local, but...

Sep 1, 2010 - Sestri - Chiavari

Wednesday, September 1 – Chiavari – Today, based on a recommendation from Maliwan, she suggested we go see the town of Chiavari, where the locals shop. We walked to the train station, as we usually do to get around this area, and got our tickets to Chiavari. It’s a pretty good sized town and I find all the loggias to walk under in the shopping district are very pretty. We stop into a little bar for a beer and espresso - one of the best coffees yet - it was their own brand of coffee. We then went out to search more of this lovely city. While...

Aug 31, 2010 - Genova

Tuesday, August 31 - Sestri Levanti - Today we are going to visit the large port city north of here - Genoa (Genova). My friend Maria in Switzerland suggested we see this city as it’s packed with history. I’m quite surprised about Genova (Genoa). We exit the train station and walk a few blocks to the very new metro station and take the metro to old town. It is a large, old port city that doesn’t get too much recognition, but still has some lovely things about it. It’s home to Christopher Columbus and this was very evident when we came out...

Aug 30, 2010 - Sestri Levante

Monday, August 30 - Sestri Levanti - Today we refreshed our knowledge of the Italian Train system. Since our last visit here six years ago, they have added English to most signs, brochures and train announcements, so it’s a little easier, however, you still are challenged with the ticket agent who may have limited understanding of the language. Once we purchased our ticket we took the train to Corniglia and then the hike from here to Riomaggiore passing through Manarola. The views and hiking paths are still as spectacular as I remember with...

Aug 29, 2010 - Verona to Sestri Levanti

Sunday, August 29 - Verona to Sestri Levanti - After a large breakfast at our Hotel, we pack up to drive down to Sestri Leventi, the beautiful coastal town on the Italian Riviera. We spent some time here in 2004 - our last trip to Italy - and fell in love with this beautiful coast. Sestri (as the locals call it) is just south of Portofino and is one of the northern gateway towns to the Cinque Terre. Our hotel suite is large and we are in heaven. It overlooks the bay and we can hear the waves lapping up on the beach. After an aperitif...
