Oct 18, 2017 - Getting gutsy!

Well hello again, It is night time.. We have finished a beautiful meal of al dente home made pasta with scampi, clams, mussels and a prawn. A freebie appetiser of a crumbed fresh anchovy filled with mozarella. Delightful. Sipping a freebie sample of limoncello. And that is also a treat. Just thought you needed to see some pics from Amalfi. Hey, we are full of bravado, now, travelling on these buses. Actually, it was a preparation for our two journeys tomorrow. We are having a small trip to Amalfi, then a hour and a quarter of new territory...

Oct 18, 2017 - Battle of the Sita buses

A leisurely stroll tugging our packs over cobbled streets down to the Salero jetty. Easy. Buy tickets, sit back and enjoy the boat ride. This entire Amalfi coast line is so rugged and mountainous. There are two ways to get to the Amalfi coast. One is to catch a very dirty, unconditioned train from Naples, probably standing all the way. You will also lug your luggage down a long flight of steps, getting jostled by the tourists heading to Pompei. The alternative, is to catch a better train to Salerno. Then, either catch a ferry or bus to the...

Oct 18, 2017 - Room with a view

Yesterday, after our arrival and a bit of time to settle we headed out to explore Praiano. Most of the traffic travels slowly, but there are some crazy young boys riding motor bikes with no helmets, or leather, riding as if there is no tomorrow. We decided to check out the local cathedral. Pretty amazing just sitting on the rocky edge of the mountain. A labyrinthine walkway and 300 steps to the beach, lead passed houses with vege gardens, caringly tended by wiry, sun tanned men. There was no real beach, just large rocks and beautiful clear...

Decided to walk down to "the beach". I didn't have a bathing suit so I just winged it with a shirt & shorts. Water wasn't too bad but I didn't spend a lot of time in it. Just mostly sat there people watching for a spell. Tired of all the climbing stairs & roads so just hung out at villa for the rest of the day. There was a heck of a thunder storm through the night. Got up once through the night to check it out. Since the villa is part way up the mountain, it was right in the midst of the storm and when there was lightening, it was literally...

Sep 28, 2013 - Praiano

Decided it was time to find an activity that was not so strenuous. We decided to take a regional bus to Positano, then take a 70 minute ferry ride from there to Salerno (south). Then return from Salerno to Positano by ferry again, and back to Praiano by bus. It was a pleasant ferry ride both ways, allowing you time to appreciate the scenic views of the town/villages built on the mountainsides along the coastline. Everybody oooohs & aaaaahs along the way, but I now appreciate that those living in this environment do not have it that easy...

Italy 2013

Sep 27, 2013 - Praiano

Decided to head out early &take in one of the more famous walks/trails in the area (called The Walk of Gods). After about 2 hous of constant stairclimbing and still lots to go (there was an old convent no longer in use at the top of the trail) I finally had to call "uncle" as my body was telling me it was time to quit. At that point we had climbed 979 stairs. I think that the reason they call it The Walk of Gods is that you may meet your maker sooner than you anticipate in your quest to complete the "walk/climb". These towns/villages built...

Sep 26, 2013 - Praiano

After our busy day yesterday, we decided to just veg out a bit. So other than the usual happy hour(s) out on our deck overlooking the ocean & enjoying the sunsets, that was about all the days events. We did go out for supper to the restaurant just across the road from our villa. We prepare our own breakfasts, mostly because the traditional egg &toast breakfast doesn't exist here. We don't always have supper out because that can add up after awhile. I think that these Italians think that if you can afford a holiday, you must have lots of...

Italy 2013

Sep 25, 2013 - Praiano

We decided that today was the day to visit Pompei (not too far from Naples). In order for it not to be too hot when we get there, we had to awaken early (about 5:30 a.m.) in order to catch the 6:45 a.m. Bus from Praiano to Sorrento (about 1 1/4 hrs.), then catch regional train from Sorrento to Pompei (about 1/2 hr.). We had decided that we wanted to go through Pompei with a guide as it is much more informative that way. This is where the story of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly begins. I had read online that when you got off the train guides...

Italy 2013

Sep 24, 2013 - Praiano

We decided to head to Pompei today. However, once we arrived at Sorrento we a realized that we had started too late so we decided to just walk around Sorrento a bit. Lots of people in Sorrento, bit more to see. I think that perhaps we booked too much time in Praiano as it is fairly quiet here and we might have enjoyed more activity as well as that there are more activities based out of Sorrento. I've noticed that I've got more visitors to the travel journal website. Please MSG. Me to say hi so that I have an idea who is checking in. Thanks!...

Italy 2013

Sep 23, 2013 - Praiano

We're baaaack!!!! Well, we were down for a couple days due to no Internet communication. Brian went to the fellow we bought the phone from (which we can access wifi with), but he was of no help. I'm not sure if it is a communication issue or an Italian issue. In the end I mistakenly tripped upon the solution so here we are. This morning we decided to attempt the walk to the beach again. We did find the trail so we made our way to "the beach". It was a pleasant though vigorous walk descending along the way with gradual decline & stairs...

Italy 2013

Sep 22, 2013 - Praiano

The elderly parents of the villa's owner live in the villa beneath us. They are both non-english speaking so communication has been limited but they seem like nice folks. This morning she came up to our villa with a small basket of fresh eggs (I can hear the chickens clucking somewhere down below us), fresh tomatoes off their tomatoe plants & fresh figs from their fig trees. Can't get fresher than that! Against my better judgement, Brian wanted to rent a scooter today for us to double up on to tour the area (it's very difficult to see much...

Italy 2013

Sep 21, 2013 - Praiano

Decided to take a walk on the beach which proved interesting since all the towns along the coastline are built in the sides of the mountains which drop precariously down to the ocean. We took what we thought was the right path, but then realized 1/2 way down that we were on the wrong path. We decided that these 2 sixty something's didn't have the get up & go to continue down to the bottom & then make it all the way back up to the top. Sorta like mountain climbing but with some trails &lotsa steps thrown in for good measure. The high...
