May 21, 2017 - Leaving Montepulciano

After another delicious and very filling breakfast we were ready to head to Pienza but first we wanted to visit the famous cathedral- La Doma- situated just below the town. The photos do not do it justice. As it was Sunday, there was a service on, so we only slipped in the door to quickly view the inside. Apparently the architect was famous for his fortress buildings but he did a pretty good job on this church. Building started in 1459.

May 21, 2017 - Pienza and surrounding towns and valleys

About 14km from Montepulciano's Duoma is our next town, Pienza. Another typical, beautiful renaissance town. Beautiful views everywhere and where flowers adorn archways and window boxes. Macrame is on display in to Another coffee and yummo pastry to be shared. Nearby is a well photographed famous church in a field we will be stopping at.

May 21, 2017 - The Capella della Madonna de Vitaletta

Heading back to Siena this little town was a quick stop before visiting the very famous Chapel which is found on most postcards when looking at Tuscany. We were going to have a picnic there but as it was a Sunday struggled to find a supermarket open so had a quick lunch at San Querico then went out to the chapel. Once we had finished there it was back to Siena for the night. This time our motel was on the outskirts of the town, very easy to find and park.

Jun 9, 2015 - Over the hills of clover to Pienza

June 9: How civilized is the diocese of San Quirico- the church bell tower 30 ft from our window did not chime out the hour until 8:00am! Maybe they are secretly Anglican...or Baptist. As we leave town we see a number of colourful vintage Ferraris parked around the Piazzo , they are a Ferrari club doing a rally called Giro d'Italia Florence to Monte Carlo. Apparently this was once a race, but changed after a number of people died one year! Now they have a suggested speed limit. We hear 2 silver haired British drivers discuss how one of them...

Jun 10, 2013 - Pienza

Monday, June 10th....Today is a visit to the ancient walled city of Pienza. This town is actually still lived in today. The streets and alley ways are filled with walled terra cotta pots spilling over with every color of Petunia's and geraniums. The ladies are all outside on the sidewalks sweeping away and a few steps away is a cheese store, candy shop, pasta restaurants and perfume places all happily waiting for their next shopper to arrive. Never once did we get harassed to enter a shop or even once in the stores did they follow us...

Italy - 2013

Mar 24, 2010 - Shopping and massages

Up at about 10 am again- perfect for me! We had some delicious eggs- farm fresh from Luciano- with ham and a little olive oil. Yummy! A little grated cheese on top of them. Yummy! Got showered and dressed. Anita was not feeling well – had a headache and upset stomach. Linda and I decided to go into Pienza to another look at the boots that we had seen on our first day in town. Stopped at the store, but there always seems to be another customer in the store that the clerk is helping. We decided to walk around town a bit more – took a few side...

Mar 22, 2010 - A day of leisure

Slept in late this morning after staying up a little late reading (my third book this vacation!) Got up and showered – heated water the whole way through! The plan was to go into town and find internet access at an internet café. According to the information we had we should have been able to get it here where we are staying but that will not occur for several more weeks. . Isabel is still sick so Luciano is still looking after us. We were going to arrange for a massage today but had no number for the person that Isabel recommended in her...

Mar 21, 2010 - South to Pienza

Up at 8 AM, showered then down for breakfast. After breakfast packed up my suitcase, Linda and Anita packed up the groceries from everyone’s room then everything went into the car for our drive to our new “home”. Used Dad’s GPS and went the same rout as the day before to the autostrade. Got to it easily and on it with no problems. GPS doing well – got off the autostrade and followed directions untile we hit the festival (donkey) had to do a slight detour as the street was closed then back on route. Roads were good – a full two lanes most of...

Sep 16, 2009 - Tuscany!

We've arrived in Tuscany! What else has arrived is a change in the weather. Our last night in Cinque Terre (Sunday) we were woken up about 3 a.m. by a thunderstorm that would have done Houston proud! Torrential rains, winds, lightning, hail. We got up and got our showers just before the power (and, therefore, the water!) went out. The great pastry restaurant we ate at every morning couldn't bake, so we got to cut our caloric intake for the day. The weather led to a delay in the trains, which gave us more time in the station in Viareggio. We...
