Today we have accommodation that I booked from Australia based upon a Lonely Planet recommendation in Montepulciano - this means we can take our time and drive around southern Umbria before we jump onto the Autostrad -150km/hr yahoo! (HUH in a little Fiat Punto - I don't think so, Greg thinks he is driving a Porsche). We have seen a few but they went past too fast!!!!!! The speed limit is only 130km/hr but everyone goes faster and the whole "keep left unless overtaking" concept is practiced religiously (of course they keep right over here),...

Oct 3, 2006 - Assisi...perfect side trip

After our amazing trip to Rome, we decided to take a side trip to Assisi on our way to Florence. We were in Assisi for about 3 1/2 hours and it was just enough time to see everything. It was also the day before the celebration of St. Frances of Assisi, so there were lots of monks walking around. I kept singing the song from Monty Python where the monks chant and then hit their heads on wood. Ha, I crack myself up. Anyway, we walked around the town, saw the church, ate some amazing pizza (cheap too!), had some more gelato, and then hopped on...

Jun 3, 2006 - Viva la France

We've moved from Italy to France, the country in which we'll spend the most time on our trip. We left off our last report on the eve of our visit to Rome. Gail and Glen elected to remain behind as we tackled the Eternal City. Although Rome was only about 90 minutes from our Umbrian apartment, getting to the sights in Rome took a bit more time. The day of our visit, 5/11, was the day following the country's presidential elections, and there were mass demonstrations throughout the city center.
