We spent the day in Assisi learning about St. Francis, cypress trees, olives, etc.: St. Francis was born in 1182 and died at age 44 or 45 from malaria and TB. He was the first the make a nativity scene. Cypress trees are often planted around cemeteries and are often used as windbreaks when placed in rows. Olives are harvested by hand in this area. If not picked in the fall they stay on the trees and turn black. Lower Assisi (not on a hill) is the location of the beautiful Gothic St. Maria de Angelis Basilica with St. Francis' favorite...

Sep 26, 2012 - Smaller Italian towns

We had a 12 min. walk with our luggage to get to our bus. Then we could relax for 3 hours for the drive to Ravenna in the Veneto region, the only flat valley in Italy. Big agricultural area, of course, with lots of fruit trees and refineries. (No nuclear power plants in Italy any more.) Driving into the Bologna area known for its produce, Balsamic vinegar, Parmesan cheese, parmigiana, Parma ham and kiwi. The stop in Ravenna was interesting. We saw and heard about the School of Restoration of Mosaics that is so specialized only 8 students...
