Oct 3, 2013 - Spa Day

A relaxing day before Roma and in Val's words "14 hour days are ahead". There is a lot of rain forecasted for this week so we are hoping for the best. We decided it was necessary to check out the two small places close to us. First on the list was the hamlet of Montisi about 5 km up the road. It was a delightful little town with about 3 shops that we wandered into - one had a little bit of everything in the line of house wares including being the local wedding registry. It was quite humorous and clearly the locals were wondering about us as...

Oct 2, 2013 - More Hill Towns

There was a big decision this morning - go to Assisi and see MORE churches or go to Volterra and San Gimignano. Both involved a lot of driving but the churches lost and so we headed off. The first stop was Volterra which was at the top of a very windy road. It is a very old town with the old wall and gate a claim to fame. There is also a relatively new Roman theatre that has been unearthed. We poked around the shops. Once again we were totally amazed at the lack of service. We were actually looking seriously at some things in one store but...

Oct 1, 2013 - NDDD (No Damn Duomos Day)

We decided today that this would be a relaxing day or as Linda said "a holiday from our holiday". Val is feeling that the troops are rebelling but in the end we avoided all duomos today and ended up with rather a spontaneous adventure. We woke up to a beautiful sunny day and it was nice to see our countryside. We were even able to sit out on the patio for breakfast. Unfortunately we had to walk over the teeny tiny little shells that had arrived overnight. Our goal for the day was to check out the thermal springs in the area but we took a...

Sep 29, 2013 - Under the Tuscan Rains

Our first day in Tuscany was definitely not "Under the Tuscan Sun". Just as we got up, the thunder clouds started to move in and the rain came down. The entire day was one shower after another as we travelled through the area close to home. The landscape is exactly as one imagines it to be - the rolling hills, the different fields of orchards and so many little towns nestled atop the hills. As we travelled towards Montepulciano, we passed through a lovely little village called Castelmuzio. This was the first of many little places that we...

Sep 28, 2013 - Cinque Terra to Tuscany

We were all up early to catch our train to Pisa where we then picked up our car. Three different trains later and then a long wait for the shuttle to the car rental desk and then another long wait to pick up the car and we were almost on our way. We knew it was going to be an interesting experience when we couldn't figure out which was drive, park or neutral or how to get out of the car rental parking lot! Unlocking the child safety locks took somewhat longer to figure out. Success and then off to find the Leaning Tower of Pisa. By the time...
