Matera is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It is thought to have been settled in the 3rd century BC. It was variously occupied by Romans, Greeks, Byzantines, etc., over the centuries. Matera has gained international fame for its ancient town, the "Sassi di Matera". The Sassi originated in a prehistoric troglodyte settlement, and these dwellings are thought to be among the first ever human settlements in what is now Italy. Up and downstairs for breakfast, full buffet. Yummy.... Back on the road.. Today the GPS took us to some crazy places. Most of the roads were in the middle of no where or cross country through small towns. The GPS took us right to the front, but we didn't believe her as the door was so small we couldn't/didn't see it. Checked into our room .. WOW it is like a cave.. our room backs onto the edge of a cliff. We had some time to roam around town. It is amazing. May 6, 2015 - South from Sorrento

Today we got on the bus at 7 and headed back towards Naples o the highway taking us down to Matera where we will be for three nights. Naples looks like a run down place from the highway but that could be unfair. I don't know. The houses and apartments look shabby and downtrodden - seen better days. We drove down the same road as we did on our way to Sorrento getting another great view of Vesuvius. The houses are built right up to the edge of the volcano. Boy are they screwed if it erupts again.
