Jul 21, 2011 - Vacation within a Vacation - Happy Village!

You guys are not going to believe what I am about to tell you! Sometimes Serena and I still can’t believe we actually took a trip to “Happy Village.” Here’s the story: So, after spending a few days in Amalfi, we headed back to Salerno for a big family dinner event Tuesday night, and were planning on spending the next two days in Salerno, just relaxing and hanging out in the town. Wednesday morning was extremely low-key, Serena and I basically just sunbathed all morning until lunch time, when the rest of Serena’s family arrived in Salerno....

Apr 27, 2007 - The ancient city of Elea (Roman, Velia)

Today we left Paestum to travel to Sicily, but we only made it a short way down the coast to a beautiful seacoast town of Palinuro. We stopped to visit another of the ancient Greek cities, settled in the the 7th century BC. This one has special significance for me because it was the home of some very important Greek philosophers -- Parmenides and Zeno, of Zeno's paradoxes (if the tortoise gets a headstart on Achilles in a race, Achilles can never catch up, because he first has to half the distance, and then half of that, and ....). The...

Sep 15, 2005 - Sorrento!!

We drove to sorrento and arrived in the afternoon after stopping in Pompeii on the way. Mels purse got stolen there!!! From right out of her bag she was wearing. So although the tour was very interesting it was dampened by Mels situation. It was cool seeing the aftermath. It is still so well preserved and having a tour guide explain how the people lived and how the town worked. He really brought it back to life for us all. We got to see molds and one real preserved body of the victims who died. Its weird, the actual volcanoe was a fair...

Sep 12, 2005 - Weekend Adventures!

Hello everyone! We are back from our weekend adventures and starting our 2nd week of classes! On Friday morning we went to Pompeii, it took us three trains, one meal, and eight hours to finally get into the ruins! Too much time. It was really incredible to see everything, and imagine that it was around over 2000 years ago. Very crazy. I have so many pictures that I couldn't decide which ones to post, so I just picked one with us in it. After spending hours at the ruins (our feet were killing us cause we had to carry our luggage with us) we...

Aug 18, 2005 - Palinuro

CILENTO I don't remember much of the 25-minute drive to the Mannas' house, because I slipped into a food coma in the back seat. But the house is amazing. It's located in the Cilento region, which became famous in 1997 when UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) made the area into a national park. The National Park of Cilento and Vallo of Diano is now the second- largest park in Italy. It stretches from the Tyrrhenian coast to the foot of the Apennines in Campania and Basilicata, and includes the peaks of...

Where's Johnny Jet?

Jun 8, 2005 - Roma - Napoles - Salermo

Entretanto,...
