May 14, 2018 - Bikes & Dishwashing

This week we spent 4 days camped on the edge of the largest of the Italian Lakes, Lake Maggiore. Wonderful experience for 4 out of the 5 days. On the 5th day, the campsite was jammed with Germans as it is a school holiday in Germany. You can tell that the village of Cannobio is “German oriented” as everyone in the stores speaks to you in German as does the washroom block cleaner. And oh yes, the entrance to the campsite, which should be INGRESSO in Italian has the sign EINGANG. So much for national patriotism in northern Italy. We completed...

Oct 8, 2014 - Mantua

@@@@@@@ BACKGROUND Here’s some of what the Lonely Planet – Italy chapter on Lombardy and the Lakes has to say about Mantua (Mantova): “Serene and beautiful, Mantua lies on the shores of Lago Superiore, Lago di Mezzo and Lago Inferiore. Unlike the pre-Alpine and Alpine Lombard lakes further north, Mantua is on the open plain, and its trio of lakes is actually a glorified widening of the river Mincio. Mantua was settled by the Etruscans in the 10th century BC and prospered under Roman rule. Latin poet Virgil was born just outside the modern...

Jul 12, 2012 - A casa

Invece no. È stato strano.

My Big Trip

Jan 10, 2012 - Ready to go!!

My Big Trip

Oct 2, 2010 - Mantova

We rollled into Mantova early as there was certainly no point staying in our hotel overlooking a busy interchange in Caselmaggiore any longer than necesssary. The ride through Sabbionetta and countryside was very scenic. We also did the unthinkable - followed our guide book for a section, followed the local map for a bit, then went solo and finally all three routes rejoined just outside Mantova. It worked fantastic and going solo, we just rode and did not worry about signs, maps nada. Very liberating. Mantova had something we had not...

Sep 15, 2007 - Mantova

Saturday 15th September Weather:- Cloudy 27 degrees (J) Mantova or 'Mantua' is where we are staying tonight. I had not done much research on it as it was a last minute decision not to backtrack to Monza that bought about our stay here. On leaving La Spiaggia Hotel (wich means the Beach in Italian) we were presented with a bottle of Andrea Poggi's own wine and after enquiries as to where we were venturing to we received a gastronomic list of eateries that we will pass on our travels. My thoughts are that coming from a man of his stature it...
