Sep 21, 2018 - Lapari

Got up super early and drove 1 1/2 hours to Milazzo to catch the ferry to Lipari. Back to island life for us. The gizmo that transfers pictures from our camera SD cards to the tablet has quit so the pictures that we now are uploading are from the phone only. Saturday - 4 museums and then the rest of the day at leisure.

Italian Islands 2018

Sep 13, 2015 - Refugees, traveling in the wrong direction

Today it's nice weather After my hang-over from yesterday, we decided to do it easy-on today, no visit to the island of Volcano, we leave the option open for the next time!! Gina and I went for shopping. She was yesterday all on her own and discovered bargains all over the city.... After our breakfast, I forgot to mention earlier, with nescafé coffee from an automatic dispenser, imagine that in Italy!!!!!! We did a shopping tour through the city looking for local products, clothes, shoes and handbags!!! In the afternoon, we winded-up our...

Mar 21, 2014 - From Lipari and Milazzo

Thank you for emails and comments. It does make a difference getting these especially travelling solo. Lipari is both the town and the island where I am staying in the Aeolion Islands off the NW coast of Sicily. Writing this from my little porch with port views. I have had three great days of cycling along the Mediterranean coast from Palermo to get here with stops at Cefalu, Capo d'Orlando and Milazzo. It is my last day here as I catch the afternoon ferry back to Milazzo and will continue cycling tomorrow. The coastal road was easy to...

Sep 7, 2011 - Lipari Island

Wednesday, September 7 - Lipari, Italy Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the north coast of Sicily, and the name of the island’s main town. It has a permanent population of 11,231, but during the high season, its population may reach up to 20,000. Today I think all 20,000 visitors were on the streets of this small town. We were so tired today and didn’t want to deal with dodging tourist so we elected to take an hour to walk around the town and then returned to the ship for a BBQ lunch at the Sky Bar...

Oct 30, 2006 - Vulcano

Today we headed to the island of Vulcano. It's only a 10 minute ferry ride from Lipari. Our first stop was a sulphuric mud pool. The mud is believed to be good for you. But the smell of it was horrible!!! But the 3 of us went in and lathered ourselves up with mud and let it dry. Washed it off and then decided to go into the ocean to get rid of the smell. We sat on the black sand beach for a while but the fumes were getting to us so we headed out of there. Stopped for a drink before hopping back on a ferry to Lipari. Ate pizza on the terrace...

Apr 11, 2006 - Lipari - Aeolian Islands

Dear All, It is really really great to get your emails, please keep sending them to this website as it is by far the easiest for me to answer. Contrary to previous advice, dont send any to my work email as I have discovered that site is incredibly slow to get into and can basically read about 2 emails in half an hour. Just had a shirty german swear at me and stomp out of the internet cafe ! Am now over my sooky moment leaving my tour group in Lettojanni ! They were a really good bunch and we had a lot of fun. Must admit to having a bit of...

Jun 29, 2005 - Aeolian Islands (Lipari, Panarea & Stromboli)

Well it didn't take Squat boy long before he grew tired of the relaxing and was keen to get into sightseeing again - but this time a little gentler!!! Through the organised chaos at the port we somehow managed to organise ferry tickets out to the Aeolian Islands and to store our car for the 3 days we would be there. We were expecting the most of the islands and we were not disappointed. Lipari was our first stop and we made this our base to explore the rest of the islands. We actually stayed in a "hotel" run by a South African lady - Diana...
